The London Marathon was the 38th running of the annual marathon race in LondonEngland, which took place on Sunday, 22 April. Aroundpeople applied to enter the race: 54, had their applications accepted and 40, started the race. These were all record highs for the race.

Mo Farah breaks British record time in elite men's race. Farah kept pace with the leaders for much of the race but was two minutes and four seconds behind Kipchoge. He crossed the line in two hours, six minutes and 21 seconds to beat Steve Jones' year-old British record. The four-time Olympic champion was competing in his first Kipchoge - regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time - was on course for a new world record but slowed in the final stages of a gruelling race in record-high temperatures to finish in That was 80 seconds outside the record held by his compatriot Dennis Kimetto.

On the hottest day in London Marathon history it took Eliud Kipchoge 24 hard miles to neutralise a field laced with venom and great expectations. A much greater surprise was to be found further down The Mall, where Mo Farah was holding on for third in a British record of 2hr 6min 21sec. True, it was still two minutes behind Kipchoge, who glided home in — a staggering feat on a day where temperatures topped 24C, a race record by two degrees.
