Following closely to the original animated film, The Little Mermaid remake depicts Ursula deciding to take matters into her own tentacles. Ursula decides to go on land to stop Prince Eric from kissing Ariel before the third day. As in the animated film, The Little Mermaid remake has Ursula transform into a beautiful brunette to trick Eric into believing she was the woman who saved him. While Jessica Alexander may be a newcomer, she plays Vanessa with an evilness that seeps in through her innocent exterior. Not only does Jessica Alexander look similar to the animated Vanessa, she also has the beauty and mystery to trick Prince Eric. To follow suit with the The Little Mermaid , the remake also chose to have Ursula disguise herself.

Although they wear their hair styled in the same way, Vanessa's long hair is dark brown and wavy, reaching to the small of her back, in contrast to Ariel's straight fire-red long hair. Vanessa's hair also appears black when wet or when not in direct sunlight. Vanessa has a paler complexion and sharper cheekbones than Ariel does. Their eyes are also different colors; Vanessa's are violet instead of blue. Her eyebrows are highly plucked and have much higher arches than Ariel's, giving her a more mischievous expression, and she wears a deeper shade of red lipstick.
