Besides having an Instagram account for travelI also have one dedicated to pizza! I actually post to that one much more than my travel account. When we were all spending more time at home due to the pandemic, I picked up a new hobby.

Apparently Detroit-style pizza is a thing. I live in Detroit and had no idea this existed until a few well-timed local trend pieces preceded the national rollout of Little Caesars' Detroit-style deep dish this week. In the same way that, I don't know, a dog would call sex "regular-style," there's a certain way of preparing Detroit-style pizza. On the surface it's a deep-dish pizza, but a Wikipedia entry also unaware of this existence! Oh, OK. I know what that is now.

Chicagoans might raise their eyebrows at the fact that Michigan-based pizza chain, Little Caesars , has a deep dish pizza worth bragging about. The national pizza chain calls their dish the Deep! Dish Pizza, which comes in a variety of different customizations. At one point, it even had a stuffed crust version. Chicago deep dish pizza is something that the inhabitants of this Midwestern city are very passionate about, and the fact that a pizza chain is able to pull it off so well surprised many. Little Caesars' dish also combines Detroit's specialty "square" pizza with the Chicago classic. Therefore, it isn't too much of a stretch to say that the chain wanted the menu item to appeal to a diverse audience. According to Reddit , this dish has been doing exactly that. The original poster attached a picture from Evansville's News 4 U Magazine, which declared Little Caesars' deep dish pizza as the best in the Tri-State area. Even though pizza may speak for itself, there's still plenty to learn about this deep dish marvel. This dish is highly contested between natives of the Windy City and other pizza capitals of the world that question whether it should really be labeled as "pizza" to begin with.

The purpose of this blog, since its inception ten years ago, is to find the exceptional pizza. Ten years ago, finding such pizza was often a challenge, but we were in the early stages of the ongoing Pizza Renaissance. Before the Pizza Renaissance, mass produced pizza was crowding out the best local shops and competing hard on price. The surviving mom and pop shops often had to cut corners on quality to compete with giants like Domino's and Pizza Hut. They bought cheap ingredients from Sysco and it seemed like every storefront pizzeria was churning out a similar product. Soft, floppy, greasy, tasty, but nothing like the artisanal pizzas from an earlier time.

That's too bad it didn't live up to expectation. Definately looks like yours wasn't quite cooked properly. I assume they're using the same oven to cook the deep dish as the standard pie, and that's probably not a great set up. The guy from CHOW video's up on youtube had the same problem with his. I was actually considering giving this one a try I might give it a pass now. This one defiantly wasn't made or cooked right.

For all the intervening years, there was never a Little Caesars in my neighborhood and no chance to give it another try. Little Caesars Deep! This comes back around again to the point that the big chains are responding to the artisanal Pizza Renaissance by making better quality pizzas. Eat This! Show all comments. I read that the corner pieces are the best pieces for this type of situation, and look! The crust on the Hot and Ready has no taste to it, so this is definitely an upgrade. I tempered my expectations because, well, it's a big chain, and this is really cheap pizza. I haven't had it for a long time, decades before this blog. I actually post to that one much more than my travel account. This almost tastes exactly like a Hot and Ready. However, this dish isn't really for everyday consumption, as it contains rather high sodium levels, with the Deep!

When it comes to pizza, everyone has their preferences.

I decided to grab one on the way home from work yesterday, picnic in front of the abandoned Brewster Projects, crack open a cold Ghettoblaster and listen to Diana Ross while wearing a Justin Verlander jersey to prove how really fuckin' Detroit I am — or maybe I just did only one of those things because it was too cold. This Detroit-style pizza adds little to make us stand out. In high school, the dance teacher would grab a bunch of Hot and Readys every day after school and sell slices by the dollar to raise money for the pom-pom squad. His review of a Detroit-style pizza had sales tripling at a particular pizzeria overnight via The Detroit News. Dish Pizza pretty favorable remarks. Little Caesars debuted its Deep! Pizza is a dish made for sharing, and we'd advise you to do the same with your Deep! Internet Is America. Little Caesars' pizza sauce is a little spicier and more heartburn-y than the average so I can understand why it's not doused on here like the kind of deep-dish you'd get at a local joint like Buddy's or Shield's. One side effect of the artisanal pizza makers was the attempt to franchise and mass produce these great pies. Once I had tried and approved the Pizza Hut version, I decided that Little Caesars deserved a fresh evaluation, even though I still don't live near a location. The rest of the crust had a squishy texture. The crust is pretty damn good.
