Ming-Hua was a bit difficult to cast, first I wanted Lucy Liu to portray her, but I realised soon enough that Ming-Hua is a waterbender and therefor of Water Tribe origin. I came across Q'orianka while watching The Alienist and really liked her performance and even visually she makes a good Ming-Hua. Ming-Hua is a congenitally armless waterbending master born in the Southern Water Tribe. Her father is from the South, while her mother is from the North. Her mother is very set on tradition and status, when she found out that her daughter was born with a congenital amputation, she was brought to great shame. This caused great a divide in the relationship between her parents.

Her tentacle-like arms are incredibly fluid and stable, and they never lose form or break even when using them as weapons.

Ghazan was an earthbending master, fugitive, and member of the Red Lotus put into criminal custody under the Order of the White Lotus in AG after participating in an attempt to kidnap Avatar Korra. He eventually took his own life when faced with the certainty of going to jail otherwise after a failed attempt to kill Bolin and Mako. After thirteen years of imprisonment, [2] Ghazan successfully escaped with the aid of Zaheer, who infiltrated the prison disguised as a guard. During the breakout, Zaheer threw three rocks into the cell which Ghazan melted into lava, using the swirling, fiery shuriken to break out and subdue the remaining guards. He thanked his friend for freeing him and inquired as to how Zaheer had obtained his new airbending abilities. Afterward, the duo journeyed to the volcano in which Ming-Hua's prison was located, intent on freeing her.

The White Lotus prisons are five maximum security facilities scattered throughout the world , constructed specifically to detain four criminals: Ghazan , Ming-Hua , P'Li , and Zaheer. In order to ensure that the locations were inescapable, they were established in isolated regions and guarded by White Lotus sentries. P'Li 's prison was built in the North Pole to negate her firebending abilities. After Ghazan, Ming-Hua, P'Li, and Zaheer were apprehended by the Order of the White Lotus sometime around AG for attempting to kidnap Avatar Korra , special prisons were constructed in largely uninhabited areas to detain each of the criminals separately. One of these prisons was commissioned by Fire Lord Zuko and Chief Unalaq and built deep within the western tundras bordering the Northern Water Tribe with the sole purpose of containing P'Li. In the thirteen years that followed, the existence of the facilities remained unknown to the majority of the population and the detained individuals were kept isolated from the rest of the world. Zaheer escaped his prison during a routine visit from White Lotus sentries who arrived to give him food rations. Two weeks following Harmonic Convergence in AG, Zaheer used his newfound airbending abilities to immobilize his White Lotus guards and escape his confinement. He locked the guards in the cell before promptly fleeing the mountaintop prison.

Ming-Hua was highly self-sufficient and took pride in her waterbending abilities, even opting to carry P'Li out of her prison herself instead of taking an elevator. She's not only able to bend them to be more versatile than typical arms, but she can also freeze the ends into deadly points. Ming-Hua used an ice blade to threaten a truck driver into smuggling her and her companions out of Republic City. This caused great a divide in the relationship between her parents.

Until AG , the organization operated through sleeper cells, keeping their existence unknown to the world. The Red Lotus' agenda is to have the humans and spirits coexist again and usher in a new world order by dismantling the established nations and their leaders, which they originally planned to do by releasing Vaatu from his prison within the Tree of Time , [1] and later by assassinating world leaders and ending the Avatar Cycle.

Ming-Hua, along with Ghazan, kept watch of the two brothers while the group drove toward Ba Sing Se and entertained Bolin's many questions about her imprisonment, remarking that she passed the time by creating stories about her guards, essentially deciding in her head which of them were having relationship troubles or regretting their careers. Ming-Hua used her water tendrils to deflect a boulder from Bolin, before fleeing with the others when the guards began to sound the alarms. Having been discovered, Zaheer used airbending to temporarily fend off the police, while Ming-Hua drove the truck out of the city using her water prosthesis. Afterward, Ming-Hua trapped Bolin underwater by creating a water orb around him, before pulling the earthbender to the surface. When Korra finally gave in and entered the Avatar State, Ming-Hua attempted to strike her with an icicle, though her attack was melted by Korra's fire breath and she was subsequently thrown against the wall by a boulder, bent at her by Korra who had managed to pull her right arm free.
