The building, designed by Greg Woods for ZAS Architects has no lecture halls and is modelled after the flipped classroom concept. The Lassonde School of Engineering was created in November In September , the first group of new first-years, comprising students, joined the Lassonde School, including the first students in the new Electrical Engineering program. In September , the first students in Lassonde's new mechanical engineering and civil engineering programs enrolled. The Lassonde School of Engineering has a philosophy which focuses on creating "well-rounded" engineers.

The Instrumentation and Measurement Techniques course MECH is a great example of a module implementing modern teaching methods, and linking theory to practical, hands-on applications. Inaugurated in , the development of the new sophomore-level Mechanical Engineering course gave the faculty a great opportunity to realize their vision, bring in their experiences from industry, and implement new pedagogical approaches. The course instructor, Assistant Professor Nima Tabatabaei was highly motivated to design an effective course that would become a flagship within the Mechanical Engineering program. With his field of research heavily involving instrumentation, Dr. Tabatabaei had a very good understanding of what was the most practical knowledge students would need in their future engineering careers. He also had strong support from an industrial partner, Quanser. Quanser engineers were ready to help with the course design, as well as customization of the lab equipment and course materials to meet the objectives and outcomes of the course. The main focus of the course was to teach the basic concepts of measurement and instrumentation systems. Tabatabaei and Quanser engineers brainstormed the course structure and decided on a combination of lectures and practical laboratory work. The two-hour per week lecture gave the instructor time to cover the underlying physics and design of measurement systems for various phenomena, fundamentals of instrumentation systems, computerized data acquisition, as well as data presentation strategies and related statistics. Modern pedagogy was top of mind when preparing the lectures.

At Lassonde, you get the best of both worlds — discover your passion with exposure to all our engineering disciplines in our foundation year or, if you already know what you want, lock-in your specialization with our Engineering Program Guarantee, part of our optional Boost co-application. Whatever option you choose, you will join our common Engineering foundation year, and specialization courses begin in your second year. However, you can secure a spot in your preferred Engineering program before you accept your offer of admission. You can apply to change programs for your second year. Our Boost co-application allows you to indicate your choices for the Engineering Program Guarantee process.

Between now and we face great challenges: climate change, clean water, energy, cybersecurity, to name a few. The opportunities are even greater: big data, driverless cars, 3D printing, artificial intelligence and much more. What do all these questions have in common? They are complex, they are borderless and they transcend traditional divides. To solve these big problems and to seize these enormous possibilities, the world needs engineers and scientists who are more than just technical experts. The world needs a different kind of engineer, employers want a different kind of engineer and students expect a different kind of engineering education to prepare them for the next 50 years.
