Portrait of a Lady on Fire French : Portrait de la jeune fille en feu , lit. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a sexual affair between two young women: an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. It marked Haenel's final film role prior to her retirement from the French film industry in At the end of the eighteenth century, Marianne, a painter, is teaching an art class in France. One of her female students asks her about a painting of hers, which Marianne calls Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Years previously, Marianne arrives on a distant island in Brittany. Marianne explains her actions to the Countess by saying that she can create a better painting.

This particular painting, however — of a young woman walking calmly on a beach, the bottom of her dress aflame — is one that Marianne has no intention of exhibiting under any name, as it turns out to have been inspired by a deeply personal memory. The painting will serve a single purpose — to tempt the eye and secure the hand of a wealthy Milanese suitor — and it must be painted under highly unusual conditions. She manages this with a combination of playful wit and intense concentration. From the majesty of the wind-swept coastal vistas to the firelit chiaroscuro of the nighttime interludes, these are pictures that invite not just admiration, but also sustained contemplation. You could say the chief concern of this quietly incandescent, fiercely intelligent movie is for these two naturally aloof women to see each other clearly, to arrive at a place where their perceptions and desires can be freely acknowledged and reciprocated.

But then I watched Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, and found it so revelatory and refreshing that I thought I would add my dollop of daisy to the ocean of praise this film has rightfully been getting. The film is about a love affair between a painter and her subject, both women, and in a sense it is as simple as that. There is a backdrop of male dominance overhanging the period in which the story is set - the film contains few men, and when they are seen, they appear as benevolent figures. But repression pervades each scene - the subject of the painting is an aristocratic woman who is on her way to be married, and yet she isn't thrilled at the prospect and she might not have a choice in the matter.
