Knowles drivers
With a few rare outliers excepted, there are two different types of earphone drivers: dynamic drivers and balanced armatures. Although great earphones have been made with either type of driver, and often contain both types, the two drivers are very different in form and performance. Most headphone enthusiasts understand the concept knowles drivers dynamic drivers, which are basically just miniaturized versions of conventional speakers, knowles drivers, but many do not understand how balanced armatures work, knowles drivers, or what their advantages and disadvantages are. Hugh Knowles invented balanced armatures in to serve the hearing-aid market, and the company he founded, Knowles Electronics, remains the leading supplier.
Balanced armature drivers. Premium audio in a tiny package. In wired or wireless earphones, balanced armature drivers are small enough to replicate the performance of premium loudspeakers by allowing separate woofers, mid-range drivers, and tweeters to be combined in a single package. As an audio pioneer and global leader in balanced armature receiver design, Knowles collaborates with leading brands globally to deliver exceptional premium audio experiences. What is a balanced armature? Learn how a balanced armature driver works and understand its key components.

Knowles is the leading manufacture of balanced armature drivers. These drivers, originally developed for hearing aids and other critical listening applications, offer improved fidelity, realism and detail over traditional dynamic drivers. They are incredibly small and lightweight, and provide greater output with less power. Balanced armature drivers use an electronic signal to vibrate a tiny reed that is balanced between two magnets inside a tiny enclosure. The motion of the reed is transferred to a very stiff aluminum diaphragm. This diaphragm is free of unwanted resonances in the audio band, allowing it to produce excellent clarity. Balanced armature drivers are incredibly small. This leaves more room for other components or a larger battery inside hearable devices, and can allow multiple drivers to be combined to get the best sound and performance from in-ear monitors or wireless earphones. A balanced armature driver can also be combined with an existing dynamic speaker in what is commonly called a hybrid earphone. In this configuration, the balanced armature drivers focus on the critical high-end portion of the audio spectrum, bringing a new level of clarity and realism. Despite their tiny size, balanced armature drivers offer incredibly detailed and accurate sound. Their thin, lightweight diaphragms are highly responsive for unprecedented clarity. Designers of modern hearables must balance sound quality and features with comfort, discreet appearance, and battery life. Manufacturers of hearing aids have wrestled with these issues for decades. It is no coincidence that virtually all of the world's hearing aid companies have chosen balanced armature drivers for their devices. Small enough to fit in the ear tip, balanced armature drivers allow more room in hearables for sensors, additional features, or a larger battery, without sacrificing comfort. Their high efficiency means longer battery life in the coming next generation of hearables as they do for hearing aids today. In wired or wireless earphones, balanced armature drivers are small enough to replicate the performance of premium loudspeakers by allowing separate woofers, mid-range drivers, and tweeters to be combined in a single package. He said that the main difference between high end headphones and midrange ones were manufacturing tolerances. The IER-M9 for example with its 5way 5 BA design does have this typical dynamic driver bass sound so it is possible to archive that, its just not that simple. Log in. Premium audio in a tiny package. And we have thousands of different models available, with different impedances earphone manufacturers can choose from, so often the crossover needs only a single capacitor. Premium Sound. This diaphragm is free of unwanted resonances in the audio band, allowing it to produce excellent clarity. This is a super-geeky article! I been enlightened and through buds , i understood there's no need to spend that several thousand of dollars for a pricey iem to enjoy exceptional good quality totl type of music. Andrew Bellavia Tom Miller: Balanced armatures also are much smaller than dynamic drivers, so they can tuck into nooks and crannies. Remember Me. Install the app. They published battery run time specs on both and got six hours on the dynamic and seven on the balanced armature. Head over to the earbud community , forget about those extortionate type of TOTL gears. They have virtually no economies of scale and their products cater to a niche market.

The Knowles difference Learn what goes into making Knowles balanced armature drivers better. Bass especially, but the Mids and the Highs too. But if you want flat, precise response all the way down to the sub-bass, balanced armatures are better for that.
