Opening at our Christinenstrasse location to coincide with Berlin Art Week and the fall edition of Gallery Weekend Berlin, Ai here continues his extended engagement with imagery created from Lego bricks to reassess, de- and reconstruct or contextualize anew works from throughout art history and the contemporary media landscape. Using a traditionally playful, immediate, generationally and geographically ubiquitous medium to analytical, critical extents, Ai shapes a veritable survey of both the Western cultural canon and of his own artistic trajectory. The point of departure for the man who disappeared amerika is a set of letters sent by Pflugradt to his parents, siblings and friends — four extended reports, each spanning numbers of months — from between and A series of paintings by Majewski entitled Unreliable Images explores potential alternate manifestations of these letters, considering the interface between the read and the seen. Using an artificial-intelligence algorithm that generates pictorial output from prompts — here, vivid fragments from the source letters — and the near-infinite set of existing online imagery, Majewski begins to conceive of the scenes Pflugradt describes as he may have depicted them. She takes these technically driven products of collective memory as foundations to be built upon and modified, their digitally sterilized, ahistorical compositions disrupted and interpreted through her process. The resultant canvases describe a once-idealized land and its lofty promise of a renewed chance at life, considering the nation within the context of its exploitation-driven transformation over the course of centuries at the hands of colonists and fortune seekers. They question German- American identity in pursuit of the motives behind this diaspora, and its parallels to and divergences from present-day migratory stories. By reconstructing the past in a spectacularized mode, she emphasizes the fallibility of recollection and furthers her ongoing interrogation of our relationship to the past. Her chronicle is conducted back-to-front, commencing in Los Angeles — the city Pflugradt arrived to in , and in which he likely succumbed to cholera shortly thereafter — and progressing eastward toward New York, where the trip terminates. This is complemented by photographs taken in historical museums that line the route — institutions dedicated to North American pioneer history, communicating their messages with through dioramas, displays and surreal accumulations of objects that portray the white settler as heroic, while reducing native populations to afterthoughts.

Know thyself brings together new works from his ongoing series in which he recontextualises art historical and contemporary images by deconstructing and reconstructing them with Lego bricks. With this medium, as playful as it is immediate, spanning both generations and countries, Ai undertakes a critical analysis of the Western cultural canon, infused with references to his own artistic career. In the course of his career, Ai has repeatedly created Lego works in order to question the criteria of pictorial composition and production through the manual processing of hundreds of thousands of building blocks. He successively expanded his investigation of the representational and conceptual possibilities of this medium to develop replicas of iconic artworks and other well-known images. Following Marcel Duchamp and his legacy of the readymade, Ai uses a mass-produced material to adapt existing motifs, which he often transposes into his personal social and political context through modifications. In his presentation at neugerriemschneider, Ai combines eight such interpretations in Lego. Ai draws on this ancient work to existentially reflect on the complex intersections and contrasts between past and present represented by the analogies and differences between mosaic and Lego. The gestural, almost calligraphic application of oil and enamel paints of the original is here transformed almost on a scale into a binary black and white, while the beige of the canvas is replaced by grey Lego bricks. Taking up the art historical tradition of the self-portrait within a larger, often sacred composition, Ai depicts himself as Judas in all four paintings, his seemingly sardonic laughter alluding to the disruptive quality of his work and the resulting tense relationship with the Chinese government.
