Eve and Villanelle are back. It's been so long since the last season of Killing Eve that I had to go back to my own finale recap to remind myself how it ended: with Eve Sandra Oh and Villanelle Jodie Comer standing at a distance, gazing at each other, paused on the precipice of who-knows-what. There was a lot captured in that look: yearning, regret, the knowledge that this thing between them was never going to end well albeit better than the last two times they broke up, when one of them ended up either stabbed or shot. But for us, the viewer, there was also trepidation: the most recent season of Killing Eve was, frankly, weak, mired in pointless side plots and totally lacking the zany momentum that made the show so much fun — and that was before a global pandemic threw a wrench in production for two years. Long, lingering looks are all well and good, but they'd have to hit the ground running to recapture that energy in this fourth and final season.

This Killing EVE article contains spoilers for season 4 episode 1. Villanelle often starts the new season hiding out somewhere and fooling someone, but the question this season is whether she has actually turned over a new leaf, or is she just fooling herself. But there are still just enough quiet moments alone where she seems to be looking for something better, a new path if not actual forgiveness, to keep us guessing. And yet. Ad — content continues below. The family Villanelle is staying with seems to have its own mysteries, like the priest father who is very against her presence even before she actually does anything. The very notion of salvation for Villanelle seems beside the point, at least until she decides she wants someone to live and then tries talking to God. Maybe all this talk of forgiveness and redemption is starting to wear off on her…. Shout out to Konstantin being shocked someone found him while being an elected official with campaign posters of his actual face plastered all over town. He still deserved to get shot, though, because we will never, ever forget Kenny.

The long-awaited fourth and sadly, final season of the critically acclaimed BBC America series Killing Eve is back , baby! It follows British government agent Eve Polastri Sandra Oh who gets caught up in identifying and tracking down the elusive and stylish assassin Villanelle Jodie Comer. Not only has her growing obsession with Villanelle consumed her professional life, but it also ruined her marriage and nearly killed her now-ex-husband. From the jump, Killing Eve reinvented the spy-thriller genre and infused it with romance. Was it fate that brought them together, and are they even capable of having a happily ever after? After watching these foes-turned-soulmates evolve, mature, and reckon with their past mistakes over the course of the series, it becomes increasingly clear that they at least deserve one.

When the final installment of Killing Eve begins, every significant character has entered some new season of life. What started as a lethal cat-and-mouse between Villanelle and Eve has become something far less sexy and strange. Villanelle, whose amoral bravado Eve once found intoxicating, wants to be good. Eve, who was seduced into badness simply out of fascination, has morphed into a kind of anti-hero intent on destroying the Twelve and, if she has time, the dark alleys of espionage that the Twelve operate in. When the episode opens, a visitor arrives by Ducati at the provincial offices of Konstantin with a silencer in her saddlebag. It looks like someone gifted Eve the Lady Assassin Starter Pack, figure-skimming leather riding suit included. She shoots Konstantin through the palm, which is a pretty fucked-up injury.
