Dr Bate cares for children with all kinds of cancers, but she has a particular interest in Wilms kidney tumours and bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Dr Bate been researching infections in children with cancer since , and has published extensively on this topic. She's also been awarded a National Institute of Health Research grant for a clinical trial investigating ways to prevent chickenpox in children with cancer. Dr Bate was awarded a Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group research grant to evaluate the impact of national advisory panels for childhood cancer. She was awarded the Johann Visser Award for Outstanding Contribution in in recognition of her work during the pandemic.
