At first glance, Jesper seems your stereotypical cocky, witty, but ultimately good-natured kind of guy. He is an exceptional sharp-shooter, and multiple characters comment on his considerable talent with a gun.

Jesper is one of the Crows, a band of criminals from Ketterdam led by Kaz Brekker, and his sharpshooting skill is invaluable during their job to capture Sun Summoner Alina Starkov. In the course of the job, he uses his beloved pistols for impressive trick shots and life-or-death conflicts against enemies as tough as the Volcra, and his bullets always find their mark. In Six of Crows , Jesper is forced to reveal his identity as a Durast, a Materialki or Fabrikator Grisha who can use the Small Science to manipulate materials like metal, glass, and stone. While he does not use his power consciously, he does use Fabrikator magic in a unique way to manipulate his bullets. Jesper was unaware he was using his magic this way for a long time, but once he became conscious of the way he could guide his bullets, he used it to perform even more impossible feats like curving bullets around corners. Jesper kept his Grisha blood a secret from the Crows because of his family history. Unfortunately, repressing this power had unintended consequences for Jesper.

When not busy gambling his hard-earned Kruge away and hugging Milo the goat, Jesper spends most of his time being effortlessly skillful during tense shootouts and dangerous missions. Those acquainted with Leigh Bardugo's "Six of Crows" duology will already be aware of Jesper's latent Grisha abilities, and the reason why he actively chooses not to use them even when he's in danger. As season 2 of the show combines various storylines from Bardugo's novel series to create a more cohesive albeit rushed storyline, we are privy to what this revelation means for Jesper, and how this impacts his role in the events of "Shadow and Bone. What makes these developments interesting is that Jesper is aware of his powers throughout, unlike Alina, who is surprised after learning that she's Grisha with the ability to summon and manipulate light. Also, the reason why Jesper chooses to conceal his powers is a deeply personal one, as it can be traced back to his life as a child while growing up on a jurda farm in western Novyi Zem.
