Of all my reviews here at Hollywood metal, my favorite are when I get to review lesser known material. Be it albums, movies, or comics.

This is the first book in a series collecting the works of French comics maestro Jean Giraud Moebius. Moebius to me, is an icon. An artist of monolithic stature whose works are like visual scriptures, full of wonder and meaning. You can can totally get lost in his art, and that is one of best qualities of an accomplished artist and storyteller such as him. The first story is called The Repairman a short prequel to the main story. We are introduced to two characters; space-travelling mechanic Stel and his associate Atan, who are called to repair a vehicle on an alien planet. Stel enters the Waymaster to repair it, but in order to do this he must reach into his own memories to achieve a breakthrough. It is a very poignant story and one which sets up the main one perfectly. By now, we are more acquainted with our two protagonist Stel and Atan, and in Upon a Star, they crash land on a strange planet and an ancient camp of humans and aliens living around a mysterious blue pyrmaid. Nobody quite knows what the pyrmaid is, but it seems to possess mysterious powers such as prolonging life. It is only after Stel experiences headaches and a strong temptation towards approaching the pyrmaid when we begin to understand who or what the pyrmaid is, and more importantly, its purpose. It is a stunning story, absolutely gorgeous to behold and with a strong feeling of beauty and wonderment; this is what real science fiction is, it makes you question, and gives you inspirations and fuels your dreams. By forcing myself to draw Upon a Star in a style as pure as simple as possible, I could no longer find myself refuge in an excess of details.

Most of what I have read has had this weird sort of cosmic spirituality, ideas of enlightened aliens guiding humanity to life among the stars. Want to read. This is still a nice sampling of Moebius' lesser known works, and demonstrates the immense range he had as an artist. Can't find what you're looking for? The stories in this volume are interesting in their way, and much better than the Incal volumes I read earlier, but not really worth the time. I do not think Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius, is a particularly obscure comic artist, but rather he is lesser known than other fantasy comic artists. And has been for a while, but reading through this book the other day at the fantastic Merril Collection in Toronto was a soul-slapping experience -- a wakeup. Even though some of the stories were commissioned by companies with a different audience, they still feel like personal works. United Kingdom. Skip to content. Sign me up. Each story has a foreword and afterword, and in these Moebius talks briefly about his experiences with various spiritual movements and gurus. The friendship and bond between Stel and Atan is another thing which I loved. Moebius is to me, like many, one of the greatest illustrators of graphic fiction the world has produced. Volumes published between The volume concludes with Celestial Venice , a paean to Venice. My own connection to Moebius' masterful art goes back to childhood, but in light of that, the true appreciation for it bloomed relatively late. Solid three stars from me. Published by Nexus Wookie's Blog. Sometimes they have both but that is another story. Fascinated to rediscover them: to read Giraud's anecdotes on the stories, learn of their inspirations and their own influences, now that I have some grasp of and experience with them myself. Though the comic lacks any of the gratuitous subject matter typical of underground publications, the artistic freedom that comes with a narrative like this is more than entertaining to experience.
