The UGC has been setting up autonomous centres, from , when the first one was established to provide common facilities for research, and for various services and programmes to the universities, since heavy investment in infrastructure and input is beyond the reach of the individual university to obtain these facilities. Its construction started in December and completed in time on 19 th December The main aim of the Centre has been to establish a national institute to provide internationally competitive, front-ranking accelerator based research facilities to the researchers from Indian Universities, Research Institutes and other National Laboratories in the fields of Nuclear Science, Materials Science, Radiation Biology, Atomic Physics, Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, etc. The Centre was established, considering the great demand in the Indian research community, to not only provide accelerator based research facilities but also to develop world-class accelerators and research programmes. IUAC open new windows to the young minds of our nation and strengthen the pool of scientists by building a brighter future through scientific understanding. This programme is held in the month of June every year. The aim of the programme is to give a glimpse of research opportunities available in experimental physics and impart hands-on training by scientists to young scholars. Upon successful completion of the project, students are required to present their work. A few special lectures and guided tour of the experimental facilities of IUAC is also conducted. IUAC conducts M. Orientation Programme to encourage interested students to supplement their knowledge and to motivate them to continue their career in science. The duration of M. Orientation Programme is three weeks. It is open throughout the year.

It has completed 29 years of successful operation. Over the years since its installation, it has been providing ion beams to more than users from India and abroad. The majority of the user communities are from universities in the country. The 15 UD Pelletron with six established beamlines provides ions beams for experiments involving basic and applied research in nuclear physics, atomic physics, material science, atomic mass spectrometry, biosciences, and other allied fields phase I. The accelerator has been operational over a wide range of energies. To pursue experiments involving higher energies, the energized particles delivered from the Pelletron are further subjected to the LINAC facility to boost up the energy. The 15 UD Pelletron is a tandem electrostatic accelerator capable of accelerating ion beams of all essentially stable nuclei with energies up to MeV depending on the ion species. The ion source for this machine is Multi cathode cesium sputter negative ion source. The desired ion beams are selected and also bent from the horizontal plane to the vertical plane using an Injector magnet. These ions are injected into the 15 UD pelletron for acceleration.

The passage of an energetic heavy ion in materials creates a highly dense, nanometer-sized cylindrical zone of intense electronic excitation along the ion trajectory on a picosecond time-scale. This unique feature of swift heavy ions has been widely used in materials engineering and characterization and is the key area of materials science research at IUAC. Energetic ions play a vital role in Materials Science as they can produce systems away from the thermodynamic equilibrium. The ions in different energy regimes, ranging from a few hundreds of eV to a few hundreds of MeV have different roles in materials modifications. Defect engineering in materials is an important aspect for devices fabrication.
