They are sentient toys who all have some strange quirk about them. Because of said quirks, these toys feel that there is no human child who could possibly want to play with them. As such, King Moonracer brings them to stay on the island until suitable owners can be found. In the special, Rudolph , Hermey , and Yukon Cornelius first encounter the Misfit Toys upon accidentally landing on their island. In the special's original broadcast, this was the toys' only scene, with the only resolution to their subplot being that Santa Claus promises to find homes for them after Rudolph tells him about the island, and later says that the island would be his first stop on his annual run that year. When viewers complained about not seeing him keep that promise, the following year's broadcast added a new scene to the ending, showing Santa arriving to pick up the Misfit Toys, which has remained in all subsequent releases of the special. Some of the original Misfit Toys reappeared in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys , which also featured several new inhabitants to the island.

Each day, this caring leader flies around the world looking to find more unloved toys and brings them back to his island. GoodTimes Entertainment, three years prior, had released Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie , which was set in a separate continuity with different supporting characters. Several key personnel were retained from that movie: Kathleen Barr, the voice of Rudolph; Michael Aschner, the head writer; and Bill Kowalchuk, the director. Golden Books Family Entertainment was likewise retained as the production company. Rudolph, not satisfied with being a "novelty act" performing tricks with his nose, travels with Hermey, now a dentist, to the Island of Misfit Toys to give King Moonracer a root canal dental treatment. A storm sends Rudolph and Hermey to Castaway Cove where Rudolph considers having his nose made more normal-looking by a hippopotamus named Queen Camilla, being warned that if he gets a normal nose, he won't be able to lead the sleigh anymore on foggy nights which could put Santa's deliveries in potential danger. Meanwhile, the evil Toy Taker is stealing all of the toys from the island, including Santa's workshop, claiming that he's saving them from the inevitable fact that children eventually outgrow their toys and throw them away.
He is a mixture of a lion and a bird similar to the mythical creature, the Griffin who circles the Earth every night to find unloved toys in need of help. When they explain to him how they are misfits from Christmas Town and ask for sanctuary on the island, he says he can't do that because they aren't toys themselves, but he does ask for them to help the Misfit Toys. Wanting the toys to find good homes, he asks that if they do return to Christmas Town, they explain their situation to Santa Claus and convince him to stop by, pick up the toys, and deliver them on his annual run, explaining that a toy can never truly be happy until it has been loved by a child. When Rudolph promises they will indeed tell Santa everything when they return home, Moonracer grants them permission to spend the night on the island so they can return home in the morning, summoning his footman, the Spotted Elephant , to escort them to their quarters for the night. In the direct-to-video sequel, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys , King Moonracer appears early on when Hermey, having now become a dentist as he really wanted to be, shows up to give him a root canal. Later in the movie, Rudolph and his friends return to the island to explain to Moonracer that the Toy Taker is likely going to abduct the island's new inhabitants next, and that Rudolph has come up with a plan on how they are going to catch him. Rudolph and Hermey notice him flying nearby and surmise that he's trying to find homes for the two Misfit Toys. King Moonracer's most prominent appearance, however, was not in any actual animated film, but rather in the midquel graphic novel The Island of Misfit Toys , published in for the original special's 50th anniversary.
