For me, Optimus Prime had a good death. Yeah, Megatron got in the fatal blow, but Optimus still kicked his ass. If any competent Autobot medics were there, they could have saved him. His death scene is sad, but being surrounded by a bunch of characters we only just met makes it feel disassociated. Heck, the only one that we have seen him interact with before is Perceptor, and all he does is say Optimus is toast. That this guy melts an innocent celluloid shoe without even the ability to talk brings to mind animal torture, which is worse since nobody watching him did anything to stop it.

Where The Transformers: The Movie killed Optimus Prime, affecting a generation, the live-action movies erased many beloved G1 characters. From Jazz to Ratchet, the deaths were not only final but gruesome. That said, the most brutal of them all was likely the tragic death of Ironhide. However, it was revealed that he had aligned with Megatron sometime before meeting with Optimus Prime and, in his big heel turn, shot Ironhide in the back with a rust gun. Not only was the fast-talking weapons specialist betrayed, but he wasn't even given a warrior's death. Since then, characters like Hound tried to fill the void left by Ironhide, but the best choice to replace the gruff Autobot has always been none other than Kup. The war between the Autobots and Decepticons lasted for a long time, and it's likely, even before then, some battles required Cybertronian warriors. No matter the case, Kup was there, and he was more than willing to fight hard for his allies and home. As a result, he may be one of if not the oldest Autobots on the team. Nevertheless, he's still one of the most versatile and creative fighters and has, on more than one occasion, become a mentor and storyteller to younger Autobots.

After the aliens were driven out and Megatron assumed his dictatorship of Cybertron, Ironhide found himself belonging to an increasingly violent and unstable military. Soundwave's research relocated the base in Utah, so the Autobots drove there and attacked, only to find themselves facing brainwashed Transformers. When Decepticons later attacked Hyperdynamix, he, Optimus and Ratchet went to defend the location, but had trouble locating the Decepticons in question. Strangely, not a single Decepticon dies in this movie, no matter what damage they take. That mega-bazooka of his has been with him since he was a proto-chip. He joined Sideswipe in stopping three Decepticons fleeing a site in Utah. It opened his eyes to the true depravity Max was capable of when, after watching the movie, he learns Max had killed in the past as well. Unfortunately, their escape was to be short-lived, as Bumblebee was captured by Sector Seven after saving Sam and Mikaela's lives. A vengeful Optimus led an attack on Megatron's citadel, and Ironhide stood by his side, sustaining heavy damage when he pushed Optimus out of the way of the smelting pool. However, in the aftermath, Sideswipe saw the destruction he had wrought and the fear it engendered in the humans, begrudgingly admitting that Ironhide had been right all along.
