The decoration was awarded for a wide range of reasons and across all ranks, from a senior commander for skilled leadership of his troops in battle to a low-ranking soldier for a single act of extreme gallantry. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub was introduced on 3 June to further distinguish those who had already received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and who continued to show merit in combat bravery or military success. A total of 7 awards were made in ; 50 in ; in ; in ; in , and in , giving a total of recipients—excluding the 8 foreign recipients of the award. The sentence was carried out the same day. The death sentence, according to German law, resulted in the loss of all orders and honorary signs.

This is a fantastic and rare set, that could be a centerpiece of a very advanced collection. The condition rates as excellent plus. At that time, it was the highest award for bravery that a German soldier could earn. The new highest grade, the Oak Leaves with Swords and Diamonds, was intricately made, and recipients were given one set with rhinestones and a second set with real diamonds. Originally intended for the 12 most distinguished service members in the German military, made of real gold and diamonds, only one set was awarded before the end of the war. The Iron Cross was conferred upon military personnel who rendered outstanding service and demonstrated unwavering bravery in the face of the enemy. In order to receive a higher grade, an individual had to first receive a lower grade. The Award was to be conferred upon 12 separate individuals who had already been decorated with all other grades of the Order. However, only one award was ever made, to Oberst Hans-Ulrich Rudel on the date of institution. Each firm was allocated a code number to indicate which decoration they had produced.
Of these, presentations were formally made and evidence of the award is still available in the German Federal Archives. One recipient, Hermann Fegelein , was court-martialed and executed on 29 April According to German law, he was deprived of rank and all awards previously. Fegelein must therefore be considered a de facto but not de jure recipient. A further 46 Knight's Cross, nine Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, and four Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords recipients are either lacking the evidence to sustain their listings or received the award under questionable legal terms. Recipients are grouped by grades of the Knight's Cross and listed alphabetically for the lowest grade and chronologically by the numbering paradigm for the higher grades. This along with the? Ultimately, it would be awarded to twenty-seven German soldiers, sailors and airmen, ranging from young fighter pilots to field marshals.

The Knight's Cross was the highest award made by Nazi Germany to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or outstanding military leadership during World War II.
