Really, it's designed to take advantage of Intel's Arc XMX cores to accelerate processing, so it will often be the best choice for Arc users, even where other options are available. We provided a deep dive into the technology, which you can read here. What we would like to emphasize for this article, though, is that XeSS delivers the best results where games are particularly demanding on hardware. Four XeSS modes are available for gamers to choose between in the graphics settings of compatible games; Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. The latter delivers the greatest frame rate uplifts 4x upscaling , but the bias toward speedy performance means that pixel peepers will more easily see image fidelity defects. Intel's latest blog boasting about the Cyberpunk performance uplift is based on tests with XeSS Performance mode enabled.

More specifically, Intel is claiming that the latest Cyberpunk patch lifts performance from 39 fps to 67 fps on the Intel Arc A card running at p, ultra detail and medium ray tracing enabled. Of course, what we're comparing here is performance with and without XeSS scaling. The 39 fps is running p native. The 67 fps is courtesy of XeSS scaling. It's also worth noting that XeSS was set to performance mode to achieve 67 fps. That's the most aggressive mode and doesn't bode all that well for image quality. XeSS at p in performance mode renders the game at a resolution of by pixels and then scales it up to by By comparison, in quality mode the image is scaled up from by pixels. So, running XeSS in performance mode isn't going to give you a true p experience. Intel has a ways to go to be really competitive in the unforgiving PC graphics. But every little refinement like this gets it one step closer to being able to take on AMD and Nvidia on an equal footing. If Intel's first Arc GPUs were a bit of an experiment for which excuses had to be made, Battlemage will need to really deliver. Getting details sorted out like XeSS support in big name games like Cyberpunk is all part of this process. Being positive about the result, it's good to see that RT is enabled while the Arc A rises "above that sweet 60 fps marker. For nearly the same level of performance but with higher image quality, XeSS gets the checkmark. With Arc, we now have a third player, and as we hinted earlier, it looks as though Intel put a lot more effort into the ray tracing aspects of the hardware. If you're used to seeing Nvidia demolish AMD at ray tracing, Arc should be a nice breath of fresh air. That's apparently something Microsoft needs to fix, not a driver bug ā the game looks for "known" GPUs and only allows you to enable DXR on certain models. That'sā¦ annoying, and Microsoft, of all companies, ought to know better. Query the hardware for its capabilities and then expose the functionality, rather than limiting support to known quantities! But I digress. XeSS is just getting started. Right now, there are only a handful of games with XeSS support, and we can imagine Intel basically pleading and cajoling game developers into adding it.
