Since acting is a basic element of the human nature, in every period of life, the theatre has been indispensable and the playing man the root of theatre. The notions of man, time and space which are the components of the notion of play are also valid for the theatre. The plays that have been performed in spaces that are designated by men are played in specific time periods. In the first part of this thesis not only the notion of theatre space as a building is presented but at the same time its presence as a temporary space created by itinerant theatre companies. In the second part of this work, in order to describe the roots of theatre the way that the notion of play first appeared is explained and the definition of the playing man is set out. The relation between the play and the rituals and mimesis and the connection that exists between theatre and these notions is shown. In the third part of this work, the theatre spaces from the prehistoric times until modern day are studied.
