Changing the dipped beam bulb on the old Mk1 Ford Focus can seem daunting, and I have read different ways of doing it. This is the way I was shown by a Ford engineer, and when you have done it once it is very quick and easy. It involves removing the headlight assembly. The main obstacle is the retaining bolt under the car! My local car hardware chain store seemed insistent that the Mk1-facelife Mk 1.

The Ford Focus first sprung on the automotive scene in as a personality-laden replacement for the Ford Tempo. One of this car's calling cards is its headlight design. When one of these unique headlights burns out on your Ford Focus, changing it yourself is a simple repair that will save you time and money. Ensure that the headlights on your Ford Focus are off by checking you have turned the headlight control all the way to the off position. Make sure your car is off and the keys are out of the ignition, so the daytime lamps are also off. Open the hood using the hood release handle located inside the vehicle under the steering wheel on the left side of the instrument panel. Walk around to the front of your Ford Focus and release the auxiliary latch located under the front of the hood. Lift the hood and secure it in place with the yellow end of the hood's strut in the designated holes. Locate the bulb cover found just behind the headlight assembly and remove it by turning it counterclockwise. Swivel the wire clip that hold the bulb and connector in place out of the way by turning it to the left. Pull out the headlight bulb with its electrical connector straight out from the headlamp assembly. Disconnect the bulb from the connector. Later editions of the Ford Focus may have a retaining ring that lies between the bulb and electrical connector. Simply remove this retaining ring by twisting it off with a counterclockwise turn.

Ford's Focus uses a Halogen H7 bulb in its low-beam socket. Open the bonnet and remove the two Torx screws holding the headlight in place, then lift the headlight forward and out of the car. Unplug the wiring connector on the back, then remove the rubber boot weather seal on the back of the headlight. Undo the grey clip holding the headlight bulb in place, then remove the old bulb. Refitting the headlight is the opposite process. Adjusting the headlight aim should be done by professionals to ensure the light doesn't blind oncoming traffic, while also properly illuminating the road in front of the car.
The only tool needed to change any of the headlight bulbs in either the driver or passenger side housing is a Torx T star bit screwdriver. Locate the two screws that hold the headlight assembly in place. One screw is near the outer edge and the other is at the inner corner. Remove the two screws by turning them counter clockwise with a Torx T star bit screwdriver. Set the two screws aside in a safe place. Turn over the housing and rest it on the bumper. To avoid scratching the plastic lens or the painted bumper, place a towel in between them.
