Niobium is a chemical element ; it has symbol Nb formerly columbium , Cb and atomic number It is a light grey, crystalline, and ductile transition metal. Pure niobium has a Mohs hardness rating similar to pure titanium , [5] and it has similar ductility to iron. Niobium oxidizes in Earth's atmosphere very slowly, hence its application in jewelry as a hypoallergenic alternative to nickel. Niobium is often found in the minerals pyrochlore and columbite , hence the former name "columbium".

Notice that protons go in the nucleus of the atom and electrons are drawn on orbits surrounding the nucleus. Image from Wikimedia commons. We can assume that if the atom is neutrally charged it would also contain 11e-. The energy shells filled up from the lowest energy to highest until all 11e- were accounted for. Having introduced the basics of atomic structure and quantum mechanics, we can use our understanding of quantum numbers to determine how atomic orbitals relate to one another. This allows us to determine which orbitals are occupied by electrons in each atom. The specific arrangement of electrons in orbitals of an atom determines many of the chemical properties of that atom.

In this article, I have discussed in detail how to easily write the complete electron configuration of niobium. The total number of electrons in niobium is forty-one. These electrons are arranged according to specific rules in different orbitals.

Niobe's apparent petrification and the subsequent seeping of mineral-laden water through the rock calls to mind the real chemical phenomenon of petrifying wells such as the one at Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. Bibcode : PhRvL. This mineral also contains tantalum and the two elements are mined together. See how this site uses Cookies. Common chemical compounds are also provided for many elements. This paper does hint at one of niobium's major uses though, as we will see. The element was christened after Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus in Greek mythology. Molarity, Molality and Normality Introduces stoichiometry and explains the differences between molarity, molality and normality. Copyright of and ownership in the Images reside with Murray Robertson. The reactivity of niobium with oxygen requires it to be worked in a vacuum or inert atmosphere , which significantly increases the cost and difficulty of production.
