Henry Walser, funeral director at Henry Walser Funeral Home, behind the Frederick Street building, where a proposed crematorium would be built. Funeral home operator Henry Walser owns three homes on Becker Street across from the funeral home property at Frederick St. Tenants in the homes, which contain nine units, have been told the land is needed for parking and that they must leave. City staff say Walser has not received demolition permits for the homes, and the zoning bylaw and the planning amendments he needs for the expansion still need council approval. Walser said in an email that he accidentally checked the wrong box on the eviction form and should have checked that he intended to get the required permits. He said his intention was to give his tenants as much notice as possible that they would need to leave. The funeral home expansion has been in the works for about five years. The initial plan included an addition to the existing building, two cremation units and more parking. The current plan includes one cremation unit and additional parking, but has been controversial, with neighbours concerned about emissions and the appropriateness of a crematorium in a residential area.
