Bertolak belakang dari pemikiran mayoritas penafsir, ia menyebut bahwa Al-Quran tidak berbicara tentang peristiwa-peristiwa secara materiil yang menyertakan konteks ruang dan waktu secara deskriptif, melainkan teks tersebut memantik aksi yang bersumber dari korespondensi Al-Quran dengan pengalaman manusia. Konsekuensinya, Hanafi pun menentang tradisi israiliyyat untuk diadopsi sebagai sumber penulisan sejarah dalam Al-Quran. Kedua , Al-Quran diposisikan sebagai teks yang dapat ditafsirkan dan dijadikan sumber hukum, karya sastra, teks filosofis, maupun dokumen sejarah. Ia tidak harus memiliki kategori khusus ataupun dilekatkan dengan sifat sakral dan mistik.
