One of the most instantly recognisable aspects of Halo besides Master Chief and the Halos themselves is the Covenant. Covenant ships, in particular, have become iconic staples of the franchise, as both terrifying adversaries and, in recent games, powerful occasional allies. A small and compact version of the familiar Covenant cruiser design, the CRS-class light cruiser is a tiny cousin of the CCS-class battlecruiser, the mainline Covenant warship during the war against mankind. It was only following the Great Schism and the fall of the Covenant, when opportunistic Sangheili and Jiralhanae warlords began pillaging former Covenant space for assets, that the CRS-class began to see widespread use as a mainline warship. This tiny post-Covenant warship was used extensively by Covenant Remnant factions following the fall of the Covenant as the design dates back centuries. Due to a shortage of mainline Covenant ships after years of infighting, various Sangheili factions began to manufacture their own ships from traditional designs updated with modern technology. The result is a compact light warship that makes full use of Sangheili mastery of warship design coupled with the power of the reverse-engineered Forerunner technology of the Covenant, and at present the full capabilities of this warship have not been fully explored. The Arbiter used a fleet of them as escort ships during the Battle of Sunaion on Sanghelios, suggesting that they run rings around traditional Covenant warships due to their nimble mobility. During that mission we get a detailed look at the inside of an SDV-class with key areas like the main hangar, the bridge and the communications room being explored in-depth by Noble Six. SDV-class Corvettes saw more use as a mainline warship after the war, as Covenant Remnant factions began to grow desperate and push escort craft into a more mainline role following the Great Schism. This distinctive Covenant vessel was a medium-sized destroyer used for ship-to-ship combat and the arduous planet-glassing process that often following Covenant military victories. As such, they became a common target for UNSC firepower and thousands of these ships met their end during the war, though their heavy armour and deadly weapons meant that many went down with several kills to their name.

Covenant Starships were starships operated by the various species of the Covenant Empire. Starships were not operated solely by one Ministry of the Covenant. Some of these ministries include the Ministry of Fortitude , the Ministry of Conversion , and the Ministry of Tranquility. Millenia prior to the forming of the Covenant, the San'Shyuum were a spacefaring civilization , allied with humans. Prior to joining, the Sangheili had a number of starships. A number of starships were designed following the signing of the Writ of Union. One of the earliest ship designs was the Varric -pattern heavy cruiser , designed during the earliest Age of Conflict and Age of Doubt.

The Covenant fleet is a general term for the vast space-borne naval components of the Covenant 's military forces. At its height, the Covenant fielded thousands of warships, most being able to carry fighters, dropships, ground troops and vehicles. Each Covenant fleet unit is essentially a fully-rounded armada, and is given a unique name with religious connotations similar to how Covenant vessels and colony worlds are named by their beliefs. Although the Covenant's collective naval forces are referenced in some contexts as the Covenant Navy , [3] [4] the Covenant did not maintain distinct service branches in the same manner as the United Nations Space Command and traditional human militaries; instead, the Covenant fleets fell under the authority of various ministerial organisations. After the Covenant's defeat at the end of the Human-Covenant War , most of these scattered assets fell under the control of the various Covenant remnants. Despite the seemingly monolithic nature of its armed forces, the Covenant does not maintain a single standing navy. Instead, its fleets are partitioned between several martial and ministerial organisations , expanding and contracting as their parent ministry's influence waxes and wanes in prestige and influence. Fleets under the Ministry of Resolution were originally tasked with patrolling Covenant space, protecting shipping and eradicating pirates, but was vastly expanded during the early stages of the Human-Covenant War to serve as deep-space exploration units beyond the fringe, protection for Ministry of Tranquility missionary ships , and front-line units in the conquest and destruction of humanity. Being posted to a fleet under the Ministry of Resolution was considered honorable, due to being removed from normal society for extended periods.

Overall, though it may not be as massive as the CSO-class or as sought-after as a CAS-class, the CCS-class battlecruiser is undoubtedly the go-to Covenant warship for its speed, versatility and powerful weapons. This allowed UNSC analysts to create a schema for identifying Covenant vessel types roughly synonymous with human naval hull codes [3] - though these classifications do not map perfectly to human standards. The Sangheili preferred starships that echoed the aggressive nature of various animals from Sanghelios and other Sangheili colonies.
