Young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II right, legend around. Paget's designs are indicated by the initials 'HP'. Paget's recommendation had come via his earlier design for the obverse of a medal featuring the then-Prince of Wales. Bronze coins of these specifications were introduced in to replace earlier larger copper halfpennies. Between and , the half penny had the third Britannia design on the reverse, and Queen Victoria's "Bun Head" effigy. In , the reverse was updated to the fourth Britannia design , which was a simplified version of the earlier design; it was issued until Both the new obverse and reverse were designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget. Halfpenny coins issued in remained in circulation for only two years until , when they were demonetised prior to the decimalisation of the currency. This was the last year that half pennies were issued for circulation. Some proofs were struck in for the mint sets commemorating the changeover to decimal currency. The obverse of the coin shows the laureate young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right - her effigy known as the "First Portrait". The laurel wreath in the Queen's hair is tied with a ribbon with two ends flowing behind. The designer's initials, M.
