It's common knowledge that film adaptations of bestselling book series often cut plot points that readers would've preferred left in. Harry Potter is no exception to this rule, and despite having eight films to cover seven books, there's still so much depth that was left on the cutting room floor. Perhaps one of the best examples of this is the treatment of Grawp in Order of the Phoenix. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , the fifth film in the franchise, Hagrid's giant half-brother, Grawp, is introduced. In the movies he is little more than the latest in a long list of dangerous creatures that Hagrid smuggles onto school grounds. In fact, after Order of the Phoenix , he's never seen or mentioned again. In the books, however, Grawp is part of a much larger narrative about Hagrid's origins and Voldemort's plot to conquer the Wizarding World.

Grawp is the Giant half-brother of Rubeus Hagrid. His mother was the giant Fridwulfa. Hagrid is on probation at this point and is greatly afraid of being sacked by Dolores Umbridge ; he charges Harry and Hermione with Grawp's care should he be sent away from the school. When they tell Ron about this the next day, Ron is utterly incredulous. Harry and Hermione trick Professor Umbridge into going into the forest to look for a non-existent weapon, where they are stopped by a herd of Centaurs ; Umbridge promptly manages to antagonize them by referring to them as having "nearly-human intelligence". Grawp crashes onto the scene, looking for the recently-sacked Hagrid, just as the Centaurs are about to sentence Harry and Hermione to the same fate that they have decided for Umbridge.

Grawp is the reason that Hagrid spends most of the year turning up in class with black eyes and bloody noses. He is Hagrid's giant half-brother. At sixteen feet tall, Grawp is shrimpy — for a giant — so the other giants pick on him and beat him up. Now, Hagrid has a long history of picking up dangerous strays — Aragog the giant spider, Norbert the baby dragon — but Grawp is probably the worst.
