No contestant wants to hear the loud buzzing sound of the red X that halts their performance. Back then, however, it had a different meaning. When that magical button was first introduced, it was used to save an act from being eliminated. Golden buzzers got talent, the following season brought along a Golden Buzzer with a new meaning.
Back in the old days of Britain's Got Talent there was no such thing as a golden buzzer. If you got through your audition you would enjoy a rush of excitement, but there'd still be a nervous wait to see if you made it to the live semi-finals. After all, there's not space for every successful audition to make it to a studio performance. Then in the all-important Golden Buzzer was introduced. This meant that every year, five lucky acts would be showered in golden confetti, safe in the knowledge they would be definitely be appearing on live TV for the semi-finals. The latest series of Britain's Got Talent has created five more Golden Buzzer acts, thrilled to jump straight through to the semi-finals even though we're not quite sure when they are going to happen yet!

The Golden Buzzer is a buzzer on the Judges' Panel which, when pressed, automatically grants an act a place in the Semi-Finals. When the Golden Buzzer is pressed, the Judge's corresponding X on the front of the Judges' desk and above the stage will illuminate Gold instead of Red, The stage background also turns gold. None of the Judges' X symbols illuminate. To date, it has been been taken advantage of a total of five times. History was made in Series 11 with all five golden buzzer acts making the final after Sarah Ikumu was chosen as the wildcard and prior to this she was the one golden buzzer of the series, who saw herself eliminated. In Series 12 three golden buzzer acts made the final. In Series 13 most of the golden buzzers were contestants of previous fame, or professional acts, although but two of them who did not have previous fame and were not professional acts made the final. In Series 14 three golden buzzer acts made the final, with Jon Courtenay becoming the first ever Golden Buzzer act to win the main show, alongside fellow Golden Buzzer act Sign Along With Us placing as the Runners-Up, whilst the third golden buzzer to make the final, Nabil Abdulrashid failed to make the Top 3.

Each judge may press their Golden Buzzer only once during the season However each judge was permitted to press it twice in Fantasy League , once in the Preliminaries and once in the Semi-Finals. In Season 9, the Golden Buzzer sent the act to the next round regardless of the other judges' votes; its main purpose was to break ties. In Season 10 , the Golden Buzzer was upgraded to send an act straight to the live shows. This method continues on for the next several seasons. From Season 11 onwards, the host can use the Golden Buzzer to send an act straight to the live shows.
As has been the case on AGT for the last few seasons, each of the hosts and host Terry Crews has a Golden Buzzer which automatically sends their favorite act to the live shows. A Golden Buzzer can mean big things for an act on the show. In fact, since the buzzer was introduced, five out of six of the winning acts have reached the live shows via Golden Buzzer. Starting in season 10, the Golden Buzzer sent acts straight to the live shows. During the Judge Cuts where the acts re-audition and the judges narrow down the bunch , the show brings along a guest judge who gets the chance to use the Golden Buzzer as well. America's Got Talent changed the rules yet again during its current season. Simon Cowell decided that nine-year-old singer Victory Brinker deserved to go to the live shows despite all four judges having used their buzzers already. So, in an impromptu fashion, Terry, Howie, Heidi, Sofia, and Simon all pressed the button together and Victory made history as the first AGT competitor to get the buzzer from everyone.
