Back in the dark days when every other publisher was frantically jumping on the openworld bandwagon, we ended up with the core of a sometimes-quite-good Godfather game, godfather 2 game review. You could rough up the working class, have fun smashing people's heads into inanimate objects and throw crooks off rooftops.

Even if it were finished, this movie-inspired action game wouldn't be deserving of its prestigious license. If The Godfather II had been a mediocre, mindless action flick, the game of the same name could at least be considered faithful to its source material. As it is, though, Coppola's Mafia-themed masterpiece has been reduced to an uninspired, repetitive open-world action game with out-of-context movie quotes and a handful of recognizable characters sprinkled throughout its forgettable story. To make matters worse, The Godfather II has clearly been released in an unfinished state and is riddled with performance issues and bugs like they've been fired from a Tommy gun. You play as Dominic, an important member of the Corleone family who somehow managed to make it through the epic movie trilogy without ever wandering into camera shot despite apparently being involved in a number of key scenes. As one of Michael Corleone's most trusted men, you've been groomed to head up your own family, and after a brief introductory sequence set in Cuba, the game proper gets under way in a diminutive New York where you're instructed to set about making a name for yourself.

The story begins in Cuba where aging mob boss Hyman Roth has gathered the heads of the Corleone, Granados, Mangano, and Almeida families together to discuss how they will split his assets once he retires. The Cuban Revolution is raging outside their meeting, however, and Aldo Trapani, the now-named protagonist from the original Godfather game, is gunned down and you assume control of his underboss Dominic. Once you and the survivors escape back to the States, Michael Corleone names you the acting underboss of New York. Graphically, the game is serviceable but pretty outdated looking by standards and the draw distance is fine but definitely has some occasional pop-in. New York is fairly bog standard visually in terms of open-world games, and Florida looks basically the same, only with more open skyboxes and trees. Cuba actually looks pretty unique by comparison, the streets lined with flaming cars, a more diverse set of pedestrians, and old brick structures and walkways bracketing the streets, making the place feel like some great castle of old. All three areas are midsized, isolated sandboxes, Cuba being about a third of New York or Florida, and those areas being a little smaller than the neighborhoods from the first game. The higher the rank of your soldier you send, the more likely they are to succeed.

That's interesting, at least. The Godfather 2 GamingDragon Drawing inspiration from the previous game's Contract Kill sub-missions, wiping out your foes for good requires precise execution instructions, such as the use of a specific weapon aimed at the kneecaps, or utilising the environment in a grisly fashion, godfather 2 game review.
