Giorno speaks of his intention to join the powerful gang Passione and his dream of becoming a "Gang-Star" [b] to restore virtue to the corrupt Italian mafia. Giorno is a Stand user wielding the life-giving Stand Gold Experience in battle. Giorno is a teenage boy of average height, a slim yet muscular build, and is far smaller in stature than previous JoJos. Araki found it difficult to find the familial ties of the protagonist of Golden Wind , before deciding to have Giorno be the son of Dio who has Joestar blood. While Giorno is the main character of Golden Wind, Araki's difficulty in writing the team in Golden Wind eventually progresses to him making the entire team protagonists. Critical reception of Giorno has been mixed, with some critics considering the premise of Giorno having the blood of Dio and a Joestar as intriguing and praising his personality, with his beatdown against Cioccolata as a particular highlight, while others find him bland due to lacking independent moments that help him stand out on his own. Like other protagonists in the series, Giorno was designed to symbolize the part's story and setting and to stand out among the previous protagonists in terms of appearance, clothing, and silhouette.
Haruno's first years were marked by his mother's neglect. Since she viewed him as a threat to her party life, he would be left alone at night on several occasions, where he would be too scared to even cry. When he turned four, his mother married an Italian man and they moved to Italy, resulting in Haruno having his name changed to "Giorno Giovanna". His new stepfather, however, would often beat him for always trying to read others when his mother was not around, even though it was that same physical abuse that brought about Giorno's habit. That, coupled with the fact that Giorno easily became the target of bullies, gave him very low self-esteem, to the point of believing himself to be scum and setting him on the path to becoming twisted and immoral.
