Brands like Hoka have spearheaded a return to the best running shoes that are big and bulky, and with the Fresh Foam X More v4 New Balance has taken up that mantle. Our testers put each shoe through their paces over a mixture of distances and paces to see where they excel, and clocked up significant distances in each one to examine how they wear over time. Each reviewer focused on speed, stability and comfort during test runs, while also assessing the effectiveness of any high-tech features on offer. Their detailed reviews are sure to help you choose the right running shoe for you. New foam technologies mean bulky midsoles are less dense than they used to be, absorbing impact without adding hundreds of grams to the overall weight of shoes. In fact, the More v4 weighs in at All of which makes for a decent entry-level trainers for anyone looking to increase their distances while protecting against impact-related injuries. I tested the shoes mainly on the concrete paths of my local park, with a small amount of trail here and there, and experienced a fair amount of rubbing on the inside of each foot. This is clearly to prevent excessive pronation inward rolling of the foot on impact , but numerous studies have found that pronation is not as bad as once thought. My experience of this instep cushioning was that rather than absorbing impact, it actually provided an obstacle to my natural gait: stopping my foot in its tracks as it hit the ground and causing the aforementioned rubbing. Short answer: it depends… While I experience some rubbing, that likely has as much to do with my own running style and shoe size perhaps I could have gone half a size up as it does the quality of the shoe. That issue aside, the lightweight but maximalist cushioning makes for a shoe capable of eating up slow and steady miles with ease. An occasional ultramarathon runner, he enjoys running really long distances very slowly.

By Matthew Klein, David Salas, and Andrea Myers While Hoka may have made the concept of maximal stack running shoes more mainstream, other brands are catching up. The New Balance Fresh Foam More series has been a significant standout in the maximal shoe world just on size alone. Its prior designs were somewhat clunky and never quite attained the traction necessary for many people to talk about. The Fresh Foam X More v4 turns that completely around with a complete overhaul that creates an incredible maximal shoe that is highly cushioned, smoothed, runs lighter than expected, and is extremely comfortable. A wider upper sits on top with a lower volume, providing width and security at the same time.
This plush women's running shoe features a Fresh Foam midsole for top-notch comfort and a soft, quilt-like engineered mesh upper for added support and breathability. This makes the ride fun, lively, and feels like it is lighter than its listed Andrea: The More v4 is one of the best maximalist shoes that I have tried in the past couple of years. While this method may not be the best for achieving optimal breathability, it's more effective than the upper of the More v4, which struggles to liberate even the smallest amount of heat. And if you don't want anything weighing you down, the NB Fresh Foam v13 won't do you a disservice. Template by Colorlib. I did not feel like I was slipping, but wonder if mild amounts occurred that contributed to what I mentioned above. For me, this is exclusively an easy day shoe due to all of the components going on. The lateral sole flaring may help runners like myself who tend to land excessively on the lateral aspect of the foot. The shoe is quite stable on turns, likely due to the wide base and rubber coverage. The Fresh Foam X More v4 turns that completely around with a complete overhaul that creates an incredible maximal shoe that is highly cushioned, smoothed, runs lighter than expected, and is extremely comfortable. I have really enjoyed running in the shoe as my marathon training has ramped up, as it provides a soft ride that does not bottom out or feel unstable. As you can observe, very little light passes through the upper, further confirming that the breathability is indeed quite poor.

I really dislike shoes that are so soft that I feel like I am running on marshmallows. The best part is that the plushness of this New Balance shoe doesn't hold it back from coming to life on the road. You don't have to worry about strain and fatigue at all! Somehow New Balance didn't go with the trend of skyrocketing running shoe prices. The shoe has a lot of sidewall integration on top of the sole flaring. The foam has broken in and actually feels better with additional miles. The upper is the only thing I would suggest making some changes on. For trainers and performance trainers, we take them on daily runs, workouts, recovery runs and a long run prior to review often accumulating anywhere from miles in the process. I have over 80 miles in my pair and while there is some wear, the outsole is still intact. The heel and heel collar are well padded with fairly flexible heel counter. These are not wrong, but only work for a certain population. In addition to the more resilient midsole, the geometry of the shoe contributes to a stable, but not overly rockered ride. This combined with a quick taper on the lateral toebox did give me blistering on my 3 and 4th toes the first miles. We thank the people at New Balance for sending us a pair. Secure, but did cause some 3th and 4th toe blistering initially due to lower height and toe box lateral taper.
