Francis bacon self portrait 1973
The work falls under the expressionism movement style, which emphasizes subjective feelings and emotions over objective reality. Bacon created this painting during his most introspective phase following the death of George Dyer, his former lover. The self-portrait features a searing self-image of a distorted face with an open mouth and gaping jawline, portraying intense anguish and despair. Some other notable self-portraits include Self-Portrait and Self-Portrait After his death, more than 40 slashed canvasses were found in his studio; they are now on display at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. A sink, a bare bulb, a Brentwood chair a mirror reflecting his back side and a watch reading 10 past 5. Bacon leans on his elbow on the corner of a bare sink, floating in air. His legs are twisted around one another in some kind of paroxism, and his hand is on his forehead above a screwed up, jowly face. It is a truly harrowing picture. Why the bathroom? This is a location where his lover George Dyer committed suicide.
