It looks as though forFord is going to be bringing back the 6.

This engine represents large evolution of design. Fords V10 6. The Triton V10 was introduced in and is still being used today. One way is to think of the V10 is a 4. Motorbike manufacturers of the late s took a four cylinder Honda cc engine and added two cylinders to it, in fact it was half of another Honda to make the cc straight 6 engine. One of the main faults with the early V10 engines — was that the spark plugs could blow out of the cylinder head. Ford use a cast iron engine block with an overhead cam aluminium cylinder head design, that uses centrally mounted spark plugs and waste spark ignition. The aluminium cylinder heads on the two valve per cylinder engines built in the companies Windsor Ontario plant, have a fatal floor in the spark plug threads. The cylinder head being of soft aluminium does not have much inherent strength in the first place, and also expands at a different rate to the steel spark plug threaded into it. Ford put the V10 spark plug at the bottom of a 5 inch deep well and only allowed for about four threads worth of spark plug engagement in the cylinder head. After repeated heat cycling the spark plug welds itself to the threads weakening the material. The end result of this design flow is that the rear most sparks shoot out of the cylinder head while driving or get stuck while trying to remove them, and when hard steel sticks to soft aluminium, the aluminium will initially give way first. This makes the cylinder heads spark plugs strip clean out, leaving a small hole and no way to re-install a new spark plug. Also this failure can occur when removing the spark plugs for renewal.
They said they did not remove the head or head gasket to diagnose the problem, so I'll have to take them at there word. Despite all the different engines that would be built over the years, one of the major unifying aspects present in all engines based on ford triton v10 Modular architecture, and required by the engine's tooling for production purposes, was a common bore spacing of mm 3.
Instead, the plan is to take a well-worn 6. Seven episodes of the build series are already live on YouTube, and you can watch the first one here:. You can also check out the build thread for yourself: Building a Ford V10 4-valve Motor. I suppose you have to give them credit for trying something different. Personally I would have either gone with the V10 with the much better 3-valve heads that were factory rated cHP and ft-lbs of torque and did some "normal" hot rod tricks or gone with the supercharged 5. To each his own.
Why did Ford retire its V10 engine? Over the years, Ford has created a number of famous engines. The Triton V10 was not as well-known as the 5. This was a strong engine that was used in a variety of Ford cars, including the well-liked F and F Super Duty trucks. The Triton V10 has a good reputation for durability and dependability, but it also had several potential concerns to consider, such as a cracking PCV valve hose, spark plugs that would shoot out of the cylinder heads, and exhaust manifold bolt failures. To create this engine, Ford simply lengthened the modular 5. Ford had been using the flexible modular engine family since , so we may guess that it knew its ins and outs. Other members of the line include the 4. The V10 was originally a 2-valve engine from until This engine produced between and horsepower and to lb-ft of torque.

Has somewhat of a square shaped intake port with more of a closed style combustion chamber which offered a small compression ratio change. Implementing shorter production runs without incurring large shutdown and retooling expenses helped to increase the versatility of those production stations that required tooling or machining setups specific to a certain vehicle platform.
