Shortly before they were evacuated their older sister, Sukie, disappeared during an air raid. The twists and turns of the story begin to unfold during their time in Devon when they go to stay with Ephraim, a young, quiet and mysterious lighthouse keeper. The drama continues with the thrill of low flying fighter planes, stray bombs, coded messages and a secret known only to a few…. I absolutely loved this book, it gripped me from the very first chapter. The story delivers powerful messages with wonderful descriptive text which stayed with me long after I had finished reading it. Another strong and identifiable character is Esther Jenkins, an evacuee from the Kinderstransport. Behind her harsh and unfriendly demeanour lies a past of loss, hurt and fear. Letters from the Lighthouse is a throughly enjoyable and deeply moving story and gives an insight into the plight of Jewish refugees, the risks people take to escape the horrors of war and the lengths people will go to help them.
