The Feynman Lectures on Physics is a physics textbook based on a great number of lectures by Richard Feynman , a Nobel laureate who has sometimes been called "The Great Explainer". The book's co-authors are Feynman, Robert B. Leighton , and Matthew Sands. A review in Nature described the book as having "simplicity, beauty, unity The textbook comprises three volumes.
The Feynman Lectures on Physics, original course handouts, The Feynman Lectures on Physics was based on a two-year introductory physics course that Richard Feynman taught at Caltech from to ; it was published in three volumes during the years to , and used as the introductory physics textbook at Caltech for nearly two decades. However, Feynman's original students had no textbook—their only written guidance came from materials that were created "on the fly" by Robert Leighton, Matt Sands, graduate students, and others , mimeographed, and handed out in recitation sections and labs. These materials included lecture summaries and outlines, lab guidelines, descriptions of experiments, homework assignments, exams, and quizzes. Among Feynman's students was Dennis Oberg, who kept his course handouts all these many years, and generously allowed The Feynman Lectures Website to copy them so that we can present them here, with Caltech's permission, as historical documentation of Feynman's original undergraduate physics course. In Matt Sands told me that in about the middle of the 2nd year of the FLP lectures, Feynman started to complain that he was disappointed that he had been unable to be more original. He explained that he thought he had now found the "right way to do it" -- unfortunately too late.

Thus, it was decided to reconfigure the first physics course offered to students at Caltech, with the goal being to generate more excitement in the students. In it, he shows us how to use simple quantum-mechanical models to work out the spectrum of energy levels of different types of molecules. Basic Books. Some respondents to my 'favourite books' query speak of dog-eared copies lovingly read on long stints around the globe. In keeping with my ghoulish experiments on the elasticity of Goodreads reviews, I have provided a handy dandy guide to would-be scientists who wish raid these three volumes for all their willy bits. I recognize that few will purchase this, but it is the most incredible set of explanations of the basic principles of physics by the most infectiously charming and lucid teacher of it. Toggle limited content width. Co-author Matthew Sands , in his memoir accompanying the edition, contested this claim. One travel-bum mathematics student decided it was time to learn physics — and turned to the lectures, eventually landing a place as a graduate student in Feynman's former department at Caltech.
