Created by Frank Miller , the character first appeared in Daredevil Jan. The character is a highly trained assassin of Greek descent who wields a pair of sai as her trademark weapons. Elektra is one of Frank Miller's best-known creations, and has appeared in numerous modern storylines even though Marvel had originally promised not to revive the character without Miller's permission. Miller initially based the character's appearance on Lisa Lyon , a female bodybuilder. She was resurrected shortly after, but the story contained a narrative note which indicates that Daredevil must never encounter her again. After over a decade's absence, she reappeared in Daredevil — Jan. Daredevil writer D. Chichester recounted that he and editor Ralph Macchio had discussed the character's return several times:. We'd bandied about the idea [of bringing back Elektra] in a casual fashion now and again, but neither of us wanted to do it as a gimmick. On the rare occasion I thought I had a legitimate angle to use her, Ralph was cool to the idea. But as we geared up for what would become "Fall From Grace", Ralph out of the blue said, "What about bringing back Elektra? In my mind, it's always been her to whom the title refers. Elektra once defined herself by the men in her life: She was the daughter of a powerful Greek diplomat and the girlfriend of blind American law student Matt Murdock. Her father's assassination, however, left her emotionally shattered, and she withdrew from the world. Her choice led her to Japan, where she attempted to penetrate the secret fraternity of martial artists known as the Chaste. She was 10 when she started training, and, at the time, her sensei mocked her, saying she was just a "little rich girl wasting daddy's money". Two years later, however, she had far exceeded his expectations and he had nothing else to teach her, so he told her about the Chaste , a group of warriors led by the mysterious Stick who studied and trained to master the art of combat.

Later, she was revealed to potentially be the Black Sky , the one who is supposed to lead the Hand. However, Elektra chose to help Murdock defeat the malevolent organization and was killed in the final fight with Nobu Yoshioka. The Hand then retrieved Elektra's corpse from the grave and placed it in a stone chamber to be exposed to the Resurrection Elixir. Alexandra Reid manipulated a resurrected Elektra and took her under her wing, re-training her to truly become the Black Sky and the Hand's most lethal weapon.

After Tony called Matt to announce he had lost the bid, Matt reconsidered not fighting to get arrested, feeling that the neighborhood wouldn't be safe without him, but, in court, Elektra showed up and revealed that she'd won the auction and that he could trust her to keep everyone safe. Her depiction can also be seen to represent different eras in comics, from her beginnings in the s to the bad girl inspired art of Mike Deodato in the s to a more realistic depiction later on.
