He is 15 years old in the first film, the first three specials, and the first TV series. He's in Dawn of the Dragon Racers and Race to the Edge , 20 in the second film , and 21 in the third film. About fifteen years before the first movie, Hiccup was born prematurely to Stoick the Vast and his wife Valka. Although the new mother was worried that Hiccup would not survive his early birth, Stoick was confident that he would grow strong and Hiccup did indeed prosper. Valka would sew Hiccup a dragon toy with his name stitched into the sides. However, Hiccup would later become terrified of the doll and eventually threw it into the ocean while the family was out fishing.

He is the son of Valka and the late Hooligan chief, Stoick the Vast , thus making him the heir, and later, the chief of the tribe. His dragon and best friend, Toothless , is a Night Fury. By the end of the franchise, he marries Astrid Hofferson and they eventually have a daughter, Zephyr , and a son, Nuffink. He is also the distant ancestor of Tom Kullersen , through his mother Olivia. In the first film , Hiccup's appearance is very similar to his book counterpart. He initially has little physical strength, as he has difficulty lifting a large standard battle axe handed to him by his father. He has bell-shaped auburn hair parting to his right with freckles on his cheeks and dull, green eyes. In the first film, he is seen wearing a long-sleeve, light-green woolen tunic with brown leather lacing at the neck and arms, a dark brown fur vest that matches his boots and dark greyish-green pants with lacing at the ankle. When he's working in the Blacksmith Shop , he removes his vest in favor of a beige smelting apron. When he rides Toothless , he eventually replaces his vest with a leather flying harness that attaches to Toothless' saddle. Once he begins Dragon Training , he starts to wear a Viking helmet given to him by his father. Following the battle with the Red Death , Hiccup's left leg up to his mid-shin is replaced with a prosthetic , constructed with a spring system and an adapter stirrup for flying with Toothless. This event deepened the connection between Hiccup and Toothless, both of them now have a prosthetic left appendage. If observed closely, it can be noticed that he's slightly taller in Dragons: Riders of Berk.
Black Sheep : In the first film, as an inventor and scientist in a society of warriors, dreamworks dragons hiccup. Following the battle with the Red Death, Hiccup's left leg up to his shin is replaced with a prosthetic made by Gobber the Belch with a metal foot and spring, which is accessible for flying with Toothless. Hiccup's father is the Chief of the village, making Hiccup himself the next in line to become Chief. However, the two seem to be complete opposites of each other: whereas Stoick is large, strong, brawny, and the best dragon fighter in the village, Hiccup is lanky, weak, brainy, and perhaps initially, at least the worst dragon fighter on the island. Their relationship is strained because of these differences, as Hiccup wants to make his dad proud by conforming to Viking norms and attempting to slay dragons, but ends up making things worse most of the time. Though confused as to what to do about Hiccup's peculiarities as a Viking, Stoick is very protective of his son due on what happened to Valka; he is at first reluctant to send Hiccup to Dragon Training for fear that he will be killed. Moreover, during a dragon raid, it is shown that Stoick, along with everyone else in the village, prefers that Hiccup stay inside and out of harm's way though this may be because Hiccup is more of a risk to the village than the dragons are to him. Stoick becomes proud of Hiccup when he hears of Hiccup's success in Dragon Training and is elated to finally have something in common with his son, although his attempt at conversation with his awkward son ended in failure.

As Hiccup and Toothless are heading back home from their ride, they fly straight into the storm of oncoming dragons, during which Hiccup's helmet is knocked off and falls into the ocean. Astrid turns Hiccup's face to where Toothless is, and Hiccup is overjoyed to be with his Night Fury once again. One that he will never win. This is Berk. They're huge! A saddened Hiccup tearfully tells Toothless he loves him when the dragon is about to leave New Berk for good. He invented his own flightsuit , his shield , and his Dragon Blade , which were each inspired by dragons' abilities. Not only does his prosthetic leg match the prosthetic tail fin he built for Toothless making them even , but it can be seen as a badge of honor for defending his people and wears it proudly. At the last instant, Stoick pushes Hiccup out of the way, and is hit instead, killing him instantly. Grimmel tells Hiccup that humans can never co-exist with dragons due to their sense of superiority. In many ways, Drago is considered an antithesis of Hiccup. Single-Target Sexuality : Hiccup has only ever had eyes for one girl: Astrid. Stoick explains that he once met Drago at a gathering of chiefs and found him to be an unreasonable madman, but Hiccup refuses to believe that war is inevitable. Dagur the Deranged discovered this the hard way. I Just Want to Be Badass : At the beginning of the film, Hiccup desperately wants to be like the other Vikings and kill his own dragon; "normal" in Berk is "badass.
