Drawabox is a set of free exercise-based lessons that focus on the fundamentals - the skills you'll need to make sense of all the other resources and tutorials out there. First we focus on the basic mechanics of mark making, and how to use your arm. By the end, we develop a strong understanding of form, 3D space and construction. I won't lie to you - our approach is tough and involves a lot of hard work. It's also structured and gives you a clear path with concise explanations and assignments you can complete and submit for review. Or you can join the community of thousands of beginners and professionals alike and get started. Once you've completed a lesson, one of the best ways to refine your understanding of that material is to help others by critiquing their work.

Will a complete novice actually get anything from the exercises? And is there enough information for a beginner to drastically improve and eventually move into concept art? The best thing I can say upfront is that Drawabox is completely free , and with that in mind it very well may be the best way to learn without spending any money. The actual fundamentals can be somewhat fluid because what one person considers a fundamental subject, another may consider ancillary to the fundamentals. These are the prerequisite skills you want to work on to call yourself an accomplished artist. Artists may argue that other subject belong in this list like color, proportions, and human anatomy.

Drawabox is, at its core, a community of people developing their drawing skills. Our members range from total beginners, to self-taught artists seeking more structured ways to practice, to established artists looking to sharpen their skills. This community revolves around the free lessons I've written and rewritten, and rewritten again , which were originally built upon the foundations of what I learned from Peter Han 's Dynamic Sketching course when I attended Concept Design Academy in Peter's own lessons build upon the work of his mentor, the late Norm Schureman. Dynamic Sketching had an enormous impact on me, and while I've chosen to narrow the focus of Drawabox to a very specific set of "core" fundamental concepts, I still believe Dynamic Sketching is an excellent course to take at some point - specifically because where Drawabox will teach you to make your drawings feel solid and three dimensional, Dynamic Sketching will teach you to make them look really cool.

Just a heads up - as of February 19th , the challenge has been altered. If you started the box challenge before this, don't worry about it. If you happen to see the changes while in the middle of your challenge, certainly go through them thoroughly but you need only apply their instructions as stated here going forward. If you only caught the changes after completing the challenge, that's fine too.

The key with practicing art is to follow through and stick with it. I had a lot of trouble with this because I had an extremely limited Staedtler ellipse guide which had degrees of 25, 35, 45, and 60 - I did eventually find that the 45 degree ellipse was ideal for setting up a grid without too much distortion but this all very much became easier when I added a second ellipse guide with 20, 30, 40, and 50 degree ellipses.
