When it comes to gear upgrading it tends to be the best way to go. Most of the good stuff only drops post game. Bitterblack isle has the best gear, but I wouldn't attempt it until you are level 30 at least. You won't be able to go in too far, but you can get a few cursed pieces if you know where to look. Most the time gear isn't affecting you as much as you think.
