As long as you're careful about avoiding the two tail attacks he can do, he should eventually do an attack that leaves his tail open long enough to cut it off. This way you eliminate the possibility of his tail clipping through the wall, and it also makes it a lot easier to dodge his attacks since most of them don't go behind him.
