But I've never seen GT or Super, I think I may have seen one 'movie' but that was so long ago I don't really remember anything about it. I'm aware that some of the DLC here involves characters from outside of Z specifically and was wondering if anyone who has seen GT and Super could say if it's safe to play them now, or if I should bite the bullet and watch GT and Super first? And lorewise it's a joke.
Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball story takes Goku from his humble hut in the mountains to saving the world again by defeating Buu with a Spirit Bomb, and these events are chronicled in animated form in the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series. When the original manga concluded, Toriyama was done with Saiyans, but Toei Animation sensed more money was to be made and produced the Dragon Ball GT sequel series, which is generally considered to be a resounding failure. Toriyama came back to his most famous creation in with Battle of Gods , and this movie sparked the current Dragon Ball Super era, comprising of 2 further movies, a new manga series and an anime, all made with Toriyama's involvement. While the anime is currently on hiatus, the manga series remains in production and more movie projects are expected after the runaway success of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. While not universally loved, general opinion suggests Dragon Ball Super is far superior to GT , and is the true canon continuation of the original, rendering Dragon Ball GT obsolete.
Throughout GT , Goku gets turned back into a child, travels the universe with Trunks and Pan looking for the Black Star Dragon Balls and fighting interstellar androids, uncovers a dark truth behind the original Dragon Balls, and even unlocks a new transformation: Super Saiyan 4. During this time period, Goku and Vegeta have battled gods, fought in multiple multiversal tournaments, and have achieved power levels that are nearly beyond comprehension. So, that only leaves one question: how in the world could this cosmic-level series revert to the more relatively grounded Dragon Ball GT? The main reasons why Dragon Ball Super should remake GT are due to the power levels achieved in Super , the new characters introduced in Super , and the arcs of established characters in DBS continuity. Not only would Goku and Vegeta absolutely use what they learned in Super during GT , but they also would have encountered or at least acknowledged Lord Beerus and Whis. This is especially true when the entire Planet Earth was destroyed by Baby - a world that Beerus had a vested interest in because of the food. Plus, Omega Shenron represented the dark repercussions of using the magic of the Dragon Balls, which tied him back to the origins of classic Dragon Ball itself. Plus, it just looks unarguably badass.
