The series portrays the zany hijinks of an American family of wildlife documentary filmmakers known as the Thornberrys, which consist of the British nature documentary television host Nigel, donnie thornberry, his wife and camera operator Marianne, their year-old daughter Debbie, their younger daughter Eliza, donnie thornberry adopted son Donnie, and a chimpanzee named Darwin.

Donnie's family lived an overall happy life until one night some poachers attempted to steal the same orangutan family that Donnie's family had befriended.

When the Thornberrys came along, his orangutan mother decided that they would be a good family for the boy. Donnie has a lot of energy and is hard to control. He is often put into the care of Debbie , who finds her little brother to be quite a handful. Donnie will eat practically anything, including bugs and plants, and enjoys speaking in his unique form of gibberish and doing "The Wedgie Dance". Discovered in the jungles of Borneo, this life form has been categorized by some as a member of the Homo sapien species.

Grandma Sophie decides to visit the same day Nigel and Marianne must capture a wild orangutan on film for the foundation. An old video of Nigel talking about orangutans in Borneo suddenly results in a "boy of the jungle" swinging into view, which both Nigel and Marianne react to in surprise. The jungle boy turns out to be Donnie, who is watching the video in the present day. He is more excited than usual, which leads Eliza to theorize that Donnie is remembering the day the Thornberrys found him.
