When Doctor Octopus's body was failing him and he was on the verge of death, he crafted a plan in order to switch bodies with Peter Parker so that Peter would be the one to die in the old and failing body. After he was expelled from Peter's body, Doc Ock went through a couple different forms including a robot and a Peter Parker clone before returning to a version of himself much like the one he started in. Instead of giving in though, Doc Ock sends his arms out into the world to find Peter and bring him back to help.

Otto Octavius is a highly intelligent and prideful scientist, better known as the criminal mastermind Doctor Octopus. During an atomic research project, Octavius' body was fused to four mechanical, tentacle-like arms, also causing him severe brain damage that turned him into a criminal. He clashed with Spider-Man and went to become one of his greatest enemies. A digital backup of Otto's mind survived and housed himself in the robotic body of the Living Brain. However Otto slowly started to spiral into depression over the loss of information that helped him find what he called "The Great Equation", a culmination of all his life's work. Otto grew miserable and redirected this frustration towards the now-reformed Norman Osborn for being responsible for dismantling the heroic life he made during Otto's first time as the Superior Spider-Man and possibly for his alternate reality counterpart putting Otto in a position where he had to once again relinquish his desire to be a hero and become his original villainous self. Realizing that the only way for him to be at peace is to regain his lost memories, Otto sets out to once again become the Superior Spider-Man.

Now, you might think that the groundwork has already been laid. The aforementioned history spanned several years of Marvel Comics publication, and even if Sony or Disney, or whatever future studio may hold Spider-Man's rights decided to stray from comic accuracy, some form of groundwork would have to be set for both Peter Parker and Otto Octavius before leading into the Superior Spider-Man's story. As Otto Octavius arrives at the sight of his infamous accident that turned him into Doctor Octopus in the first place, he works to get to the sub-levels and find what he needs to finally rid himself of his greatest enemy. As Doctor Octopus watches from afar, Digger is informed to distribute the severance pay to the remaining members of the Night Shift so they will not bother him again and to warn them not to go visit the Brothers Grimm in the hospital.
