They are skilled in the art of persuasion, dnd samurai, they are wise souls, and yet they can still dnd samurai opponents. Samurai as a Fighter subclass is not bound by the name Samurai. Our example build is not only a great way to show off the diverse options for building a Samurai, but an exercise in flavour as well.

Further, the primary weapon of a samurai is a katana , which is a larger sword frequently used with two hands, but still usable with one hand only:. However, a long-sword is a melee weapon, which means Strength, not Dexterity matters. One other thing I considered is that samurai in the late-medieval Edo Period were required by Shogunate law to have two swords:. Thus, my elf-samurai character would need two swords, not one, if I wanted to be historically accurate. Typically, the second sword was either a smaller wakizashi or kodachi. For my character idea, I went with the kodachi. But the biggest problem with this build concept was that if I wanted to use a long sword effectively, the character would have to rely on Strength, not Dexterity, which is harder to build for an elf.
Therefore, you will never be in a dnd samurai scenario without the option to use it. These constraints I put on myself made for some interesting contradictions.
The Samurai offers a predictable source of turn-long advantage, which significantly increases accuracy, and therefore average damage. At higher levels, once per turn the Samurai can trade one attack made with advantage for two standard-roll attacks, adding to the number of attacks they deliver. While high level spellcasters can perform miraculous feats, in terms of damage they fall behind optimized martial characters. Tallying all damage done to multiple enemies within an area of effect spell might help them catch up, but such circumstances are too situational to count on. This limits the warlock to targeting one enemy that might already be defeated by the time the debuffs are in place. Optimized fighters, conversely, can consistently deal their full damage in round one. First round damage is vital in 5e DnD , as it was in earlier editions.

The Samurai is a fighter who draws on an implacable fighting spirit to overcome enemies. A Samurai's resolve is nearly unbreakable, and the enemies in a Samurai's path have two choices: yield or die fighting. When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: History, Insight, Performance, or Persuasion. Alternatively, you learn one language of your choice. Starting at 3rd level, your intensity in battle can shield you and help you strike true. As a bonus action on your turn, you can give yourself advantage on weapon attack rolls until the end of the current turn. When you do so, you also gain 5 temporary hit points. The number of temporary hit points increases when you reach certain levels in this class, increasing to 10 at 10th level and 15 at 15th level.

While you have 0 hit points during that extra turn, taking damage causes death saving throw failures as normal, and three death saving throw failures can still kill you. The added mobility helps melee fighters close the gap with enemies or ranged fighters keep distance between them and foes. Even ranged Samurai fighter builds can't expect to avoid damage forever. We put the points into Constitution to get more HP and better saves. Begin the turn by activating either Cry or Spirit depending on range to the target. Two sources of low temporary hit points also add to a character's tankiness while being unlikely to clash. The Samurai can then use their Reaction to trigger Strength Before Death and repeat the attack routine for another nine attacks. The rest kinda wrote itself. These attacks are incredibly fast but difficult to land accurately, and as such attack rolls are made without proficiency or ability score bonuses damage is dealt normally with each hit. The Elf enhances all the features that make a Dexterity samurai great. Earth Stance. At twelvth, Sharpshooter gives us a great damage boost as well as squeezing a bit more range out of our Musket. At third level, when selecting this archetype, you choose one extra skill proficiency between History, Insight, Performance, or Persuasion. Slasher is a control option for your samurai. You could just as easily move that to Charisma. As long as you are in this stance; if you use the Dash action, you can attack all the enemies that you come within weapon range of.
