I recently got quite a few legendary weapons and armor along with an exotic chest-piece from a quest. I picked my favorite legendaries and the Exotic is useless unless you have legendary marks, I'm tempted to scrap them for legendary marks to trade in for better exotics with Xur, but I'm afraid that these exotics and legendaries can only be received once and then you never ever receive them again after scrapping them, being a collector, I'm terrified of scraping something that is unique and can only be received once per game. You can receive all items legendary and exotic unlimited times. In fact, if you dismantle an exotic, you can buy it back from your vault under the Collection section using shards. Once you have an exotic you can purchase it again in collections in the vault. Legendary items drop relatively frequently. Good luck trying to collect them all, you wil find that some you get more often than others. In D2 there are no special attributes for legendary items like in D1. If you have multiples of an item the only difference will be the light level of the item and any mod you make to it. You will find yourself scrapping a lot of legendary and exotics as you play this game.

All of that makes it really tempting to hold on to those Exotics and just keep Infusing them over and over as you progress. The first time you dismantle an Exotic is a little heartbreaking, but they become a victim of the constant loot-chase that is Destiny 2 just like everything else. But every Exotic you pick up and decrypt can be reacquired at any time for a pretty cheap price. You can get to the vault at the Farm or at the Tower. Scrap most legendary items, the only reason I would keep any is if they are higher light or a specific armor set.
