A once struggling Cuban cafe in Key Largo has renewed energy and some family flavor, under owners who took over the establishment more than one year ago.

We learned — only order one slice of flan. These are huge! Enough for two people to share; the slices are extremely tall. The excitement to try something new and different, and the opportunity to meet locals and hear their stories interests us more than cookie cutter franchises. The flan is huge, made daily, and displayed in a case near the front of the restaurant. You can see the espresso machine in the background! Outside, there is a walk-up window and a board with the daily specialities.

Ordered the cuban sammi and it was good, large portions. The pork was a little dry to me and I, personally, like a little more sauce on it but it was very good. The empanadas were good and tasty, one was so full of oil it may of been refried. Server was nice. February My wife and I stopped by for breakfast yesterday. We met the owners who were super friendly and attentive to service. The food was great! We really enjoyed the chicken empanadas and croquettes. The Cuban coffee was also delicious. They have a lot of GF things to pick from but mine and my hubbies dishes were super tuff and chewy. Staff was knowledgeable about gluten. Meat was not breaded- sides were GF - rice,beans and plantains. We had the garlic shrimp and it was excellent. Staff was great and understood gluten and contamination.
