As the son of 'Dirty' Den Watts, his reputation preceded him. Dennis may have been able to turn on the charm with the ladies, but he had a certain sinister edge. Like father, like son, Dennis was unafraid to dabble in the dark side - getting involved in murder, drugs and violence. And it's no surprise that, like his dad, he found his way into the bedrooms of most of Albert Square's leading ladies! However, it was his controversial love for Sharon, Den's adopted daughter, that ended his philandering ways, proving that his rampant bed-hopping had been a cover for his search for real love and affection. Dennis was murdered by Danny Moon at the behest of gangster Johnny Allen.

In his storylines, Dennis had murdered his former gangland boss Jack Dalton ; feuded with his alpha-male rival Phil Mitchell ; became friends with mobsman Andy Hunter ; had a complicated relationship with ex-girlfriend Zoe Slater ; clashed with Phil's brother Grant Mitchell ; and got entangled in a quarrel with crime lord Johnny Allen. It was the latter that ultimately led to Dennis' demise in December when he confronted and beat Johnny half to death in revenge for killing Andy and throttling Sharon, after which Johnny ordered for Dennis to be killed in retribution; consequently Dennis was fatally stabbed on the stroke of midnight and he died in Sharon's arms. Thereafter Dennis lived on through his son who was named after him by Sharon by calling him Dennis Rickman Jr. He made his first appearance is in handcuffs, as he is on day release from prison to attend his mother's funeral. His introduction as a full-time character is marked by a fight with Phil Mitchell , in which he floors Phil with a single punch. Dennis appears in handcuffs on April , as he is on day release from prison to attend his mother's funeral. It soon transpires that he was the product of a fling between his teenaged mother Paula, and her adult ex-lover Den Watts.
