Ben Affleck's new movie Deep Water has a low 36 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, but how does its score compare to the scores of his other movies?
Deep Water is a erotic psychological thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne , [3] from a screenplay by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson , based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. It marks Lyne's return to filmmaking after a year absence since his last film, Unfaithful Vic has retired early after developing guidance chips for combat drones, and his complicated relationship with Melinda is held together by a precarious arrangement: they sleep apart and Melinda takes lovers openly, even in their family home, while Vic finds solace in raising his large collection of snails. Their open marriage is no secret to their concerned friends, and Vic grows increasingly jealous, while Melinda laments his lack of passion. Melinda invites her latest lover, Joel, to a neighbour's party. Alone with Joel, Vic tells him that he murdered Melinda's previous lover Martin, who has recently disappeared. The story spreads through their circle of friends, raising the suspicions of noir writer Don Wilson.

They have stuck together, seemingly for their daughter Trixie Grace Jenkins , but there seems to be little love that remains between the couple. The first extended scene takes place at a party, where Melinda gets very drunk and flirts with a handsome young man she personally invited to the soiree. Is he kidding? Why is this man devoting so much time and capital to his theory that Vic is a murderer? Has Vic always seen human life as disposable? She says at one point that she does so because of the way they make her feel. These are selfish creatures, two people who give into basic instincts in ways that most moral people repress. Affleck nails this simmering selfishness perfectly, proving to be a great fit for the world of the writer who gave us Tom Ripley. The script, especially in its final act, hints at some darker themes that a longer version probably unpacks more but Affleck and De Armas sell this psychosexual dysfunction in a way that other performers would have missed.

Affleck plays Vic, a retired software developer who made a fortune designing a chip that helps drones locate and destroy targets. He spends his days with his daughter while his wild wife Melinda de Armas , having grown bored of their routine, entertains herself with a series of very public affairs. Lyne, in his first film in 20 years, seems unable to tease out the tension from the love-hate story, sexual or otherwise. I own up to the stupid joke in the first sentence of this review, but it is true. Working the front desk is his assistant Mabel Sean Zoey Deutch , a young woman who has her sights set on a horizon far beyond the tailor shop. Discreet and meticulous, Burling makes beautiful clothes for his Chicago clients, including members of the Boyle Gang, the heavies who run the neighbourhood. Burling stays out of the way, rarely makes eye contact with the tough guys and is unfailingly polite. What unfolds from this point is a whip-lash inducing game of twister as the characters' motivations tie the story in knots.

The Table Mr Smith After Justice League , Affleck entered a new era of his career, with his next six movies seeing highly praised performances and five Fresh Rotten Tomatoes, but Deep Water and The Tender Bar start to break that streak as the first back-to-back Rotten scores he's received since Justice League even though his personal performances in both movies received compliments.
