For the most part the NPCs do very little damage but do count as phantoms and buff the boss's health, their damage is usually not worth that extra health. Summoning another player does increase the boss's health as well but a human is usually able to do enough damage that it isn't as big of a deal. The boss doesn't need to be alive to place your sign, there just needs to have been a boss at some point so you can't summon into transitory areas like Road of Sacrifices, for example. It's interesting co-op to help players fight the bosses, especially the Nameless King. Other enemies get smaller bonuses. Anyone else have this issue?

Passwords are mostly used to connect with friends for co op. On the other hand, if you're in an invasion queue yourself, the soapstone turning gray may also indicate you're about to try an invasion yourself. If there's an incoming invasion attempt, the soapstone will turn gray like in other cases when it's not available but it happens far before you get the notification that you have been invaded.
