When and why did you start training for fighting? A friend introduced me to it. At first, it was just something to do over the summer. I quickly realized that this is what I wanted to do. What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It's recognition for what I've done, but this is just the beginning; I want the belt.

Curtis Lionell Blaydes [7] [8] born February 18, [9] is an American professional mixed martial artist. As of July 25, , he is 5 in the UFC heavyweight rankings. Blaydes was born in Naperville, Illinois , and raised in nearby Chicago along with his four other siblings. He began wrestling for the De La Salle Institute , winning a state title his senior year while also compiling an undefeated 44—0 record. During his four years, Blaydes compiled an overall record of 95—18 with takedowns. Blaydes also played American football for De La Salle as a defensive end. He later earned a full wrestling scholarship to Northern Illinois University. After he began fighting in amateur mixed martial arts, Blaydes left school to focus on a career in MMA. Curtis Blaydes pulled off an improbable comeback earlier tonight Sat. Almeida dominated this fight from the opening bell. The Brazilian powerhouse successfully scored nine total takedowns over the first five minutes of action, which is a new heavyweight single round record. Things looked bleak for Blaydes after getting rag-dolled for the first time in his career. Blaydes came out a little more aggressive on his feet to begin the second, but Almeida was more than willing to exchange. Almeida eventually went back to the well and shot in for a takedown. Blaydes continued to rain down hammer fists to the side of the head to eventually put Almeida out.

As the fifth contender and coming off a loss, Blaydes defended his spot against seventh ranked Almeida, who was undefeated in the UFC. He started strong, but ultimately Blaydes handed the Brazilian grappling phenom his first loss in the promotion and dashed his dreams of fighting for the title next. Jailton shot a takedown in the first fifteen seconds but Blaydes got his underhook and got the fence behind him. Almeida kept after it though, and got Blaydes down. He almost took the back, but Blaydes foiled it.
