It's based on the company's flagship off-road-only motocross bike the Honda CRFR , so the L has off-road pedigree running deep through its veins, but that is not where its true calling lies. For touring duties, the Honda CRF Rally with its enhanced comfort and taller screen is generally the favoured option. It's a family of off-road-ready bikes built around a cc single-cylinder engine. The extra 18mm wheel base means it feels planted and stable whether blasting along fast tracks or over bumps, but little has been lost in terms of agility. Navigating through steep down hills weaving through trees was an easy and predictable experience with the bike retaining good balance. On the occasions where we got to ride it like an enduro bike rather than a trail bike, it is surprisingly capable. Yes you can feel the extra weight which makes it slightly more physical but it can be ridden at a brisk pace, with the lack of power actually contributing to the easy going and useable character of the bike.

There was a time when enduro bikes and trail bikes were the same thing. But over the years, the enduro bike has become more specialised to cope with the demands of competition, leaving the humble trail bike in its dust. Make no mistake though, the trail bike still has a place in this high-tech, high-performance world, and the new Honda CRFRL is a great example of why. It hit the market in as the CRFL. That model was in turn descended from the CRFX which had a long and successful run in the s. But despite sharing many components with those two models, the RL was still just a trail bike. And with a price tag that was a little bit much, the model ran its course in Australia and was dropped in Fast forward to late , and the RL is back on our shores. The RL is cheaper, and Honda is hoping to sell it as a lightweight dual-sport trail bike option — a purpose it is more than capable of. The former MotoGP rider has used the CRFRL on his tours for a number of years and is well-versed in its reliability and capability as an adventure bike. We were given three bikes to ride — a completely stock learner-friendly RL, a derestricted RL, and modified RL with aftermarket accessories the latter two prepared by Beattie for his tours.

The first time I went to a World Rally Championship event in Spain, I saw some things I expected: turbocharged AWD hatchbacks blitzing back roads at mph, banged-up cars limping into the pits at the end of stages, rabid fans watching the race from wherever they could find a spot, including up in trees. What I didn't expect—when driving from one stage to another—was to glance to the side and see one of the race cars idling alongside in traffic, waiting its turn for a roundabout. Indeed, all the WRC cars were required to drive between stages on public roads, and they were all street-legal. Thus leading to the surreal sight of two guys wearing race suits and helmets sitting there in rush hour in their Skoda race car. I hadn't noticed when they were going past sideways, but that thing had a license plate.
This does NOT cost you extra. Or, did you already buy one and would like some more info on it? This should provide you with all you need to determine whether this is the right Honda dual sport for you. The Honda CRF RL dirt bikes came out in , basically catapulting to one of the top dual sports in the division. You can probably imagine how these have become so popular. And when it comes to off-road riding, it offers stellar performance where others compromise. What should you take away from this? This is a serious dual sport bike. Honda wanted to make something fun and exciting… but still street legal. Did they succeed?

If you're all about that trail-life, but aren't necessarily feeling the trailer-life aspect of it, then Honda's new CRF L was built with you in mind. It's a street-legal machine with mirrors and lights that'll let you connect the dots between your favorite trails via blacktop. As for the brown top, a cc plant generates the power with a light-pull clutch and knobbies to keep it under control. It leads off with a large, tripletree-mount front fender that moves its weight from the unsprung category to the sprung one in a bid to maximize the front suspension's sensitivity over terrain. A set of uprights add a negligible amount of mass, but they're a necessary evil on inverted forks, especially ones that are meant to get down and dirty while out in nature. The factory tops the front end off with a cyclops headlight buried in race-style graphics on the flyscreen that suggest a number plate with matching areas on each side, to much the same effect. LED turn signals ride on short standoffs to complete the forward lighting.

The new version gets a fresh Engine Mode Select button which will help you select from the three available riding modes Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive with a push of a button. Power comes from a cc, liquid - cooled, single - cylinder, four-stroke engine which is mated on a revised five speed transmission. A trail bike is lighter, more agile, capable in technical terrain and easier to maintain, but it lacks in comfort, maintenance intervals, and luggage capacity. Sign in with Facebook. Value for Money.
