They just don't have the construction or merino content to make good outdoor activity wear. Can't go wrong. I bought 3 from costco last year and they are quite warm. I picked up 2 black ones that I plan on using as a base layer for my trip to Scotland in May. I got 3 of these mens about 3 years ago, they're fantastic! Get em while you can, I've been looking for mens but they don't seem to stock them anymore.
